2 Corinthians 9 P wrote possibly Autumn 57AD
Ch. 8 & 9 explain principles of Chr. giving
1-7: it begins with surrender to the Lord
8-9: it is motivated by grace
10-15: it requires faith
16-24: it also requires faithfulness
P wants the Cor. to remember the promise they made a year ago about giving to the poor Chr. in Jerusalem
02
1. A Testimony to Others 1-5 1: for: links to Ch. 8; to write: present tense – “to go on writing”
Ministering: Wesley: “Anything that conveyed God’s good gifts from one member of the church to another was, in the apostle’s eyes, a ministry.”
2: Readiness: contribution not prepared, but promised a full contribution; it would be a disgrace if they fell short of their promise
03
1. A Testimony to Others 1-5 3: sent: I am sending; glorying: not in men or in human achievements He gloried in God’s grace
4: by any means: when, as in 13:2; shame: we same as in Heb. 2:3 – he sought not to save face for P, but the Cor.
5: repeated emphasis on the already promised collection; he wanted them to fulfill their promise, not wanting them to extort for the money
04
1. A Testimony to Others 1-5 Finished showing the reasons for collecting, now shows the joys and benefits of Chr. giving
05
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 6: taught elsewhere: Pr. 11:24, 19:17, Lk. 6:38; when we give, we are blessed as a by-product of our obedience
7: why give?
1. God owns the world & everything in it, owned by right of creation, Ps. 50:20-12 – all
2. All men, esp, Chr., are themselves property of God. 1 Cor. 6:20
3. All men are accountable to God as stewards of His wealth.
06
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 7: why give?
4. The proper motivation in giving is determinative. Ananias & Sapphira’s gift was rejected due to the selfish motivation, yet the Widow’s small mites were accepted.
5: God Himself is a motive. He gave, John 3:16
6: Christ is a motive. 2 Cor. 6:15 unspeakable gift
7: The Church of Christ is a motive, done to church is done to Christ.
07
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 7: why give?
8. The world is another motive. Just like Christ, we are to have compassion.
9. I myself am a motive. 2 Cor. 8:14
10. Gifts to Christ are saved; all else is lost. Mt. 6:19-20
11. Partnership w/ God is a motive. Mt. 25:21
12. Men love a cheerful giver. Generous gives a warm welcome.
13: “God loveth a cheerful giver.”
08
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 8: amount of giving is influenced by his trust, or mistrust, in this promise
9: Ps. 112:9 blessedness of the man who fears God; Hughes: “reads like the epitaph of a philanthropist.”
10: How to give: God is deeply concerned how we give
1. Not for vain-glory – Mt. 6:1-4
2. Not grudgingly – 2 Cor. 9:7, Philemon 14; giving not of a sales pitch, but of desire to obey God
09
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 10: How to give:
3. Not deceitfully – Ac. 5:1-12 ex. of this error
4. Not without love – w/o love, it profits nothing. 1 Cor. 13:3
5. Not while estranged from brother – Mt. 5:23-24
6. It should be done w/ simplicity – Rm. 12:8
7. In the Name of Christ – Mk. 9:41, Col. 3:17
8. Systematically – 1 Cor. 16:2 each 1st day of the week
9. Liberally – Lk. 6:38 given and given to you
10. Sacrificially – body as living sacrifice, Rm. 12:3, Heb. 13:6
11. Cheerfully – only givers are happy people. Miserable
10
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 10: How to give:
12. Purposefully – 2 Cor. 9:7 – not casting in whatever is in your pocket, but with intent
13. Secretly – Mt. 6:3-4
14. Upon a basis of equality, 2 Cor. 8:13-14; never God’s plan for 20% of a cong. gives 90%
15. One’s self to be given first – 2 Cor. 8:5
11: Enriched: not just in financial responsibility
Look at what was given to Jesus and how it was increased; think of the lad’s lunch!
11
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 12: wants of the saints: what they lacked, not just what they wanted; thanksgivings: God’s name glorified, souls converted, converts won, and on top, the multiplication of grace
13: proving: “divine test of Christianity” Coffman; non-givers are non-Chr.; confession: by his conversion, he’s already pledged to support God’s work
12
2. Must Be Done Gladly 6-15 14: recipients would remember givers in prayer; long after you: reputation and honor be entranced and magnified
P’s appeal was successful; Carver: “a few months later he wrote from Cor. to the Romans that, ‘Macedonia & Achaia have been please to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.’” Rm. 15:26 NASB
15: JC is the gift of God; unspeakable: ‘none other than JC Himself!’
13
Lessons P reminded the Cor. Repeatedly they had already committed to giving, and they needed to make good on their promise. When we commit, we, too, should follow through. 5
God commands us to give; He is more concerned with our attitude over the amount. 7
