slide2. Artificial recharge of Groundwater The process of spreading or impounding water on the land to increase the infiltration through the soil and percolation to the aquifer or of injecting water by wells directly into the aquifer. Saturday, April 23, 2022 2
slide4. Methods of Artificial Recharge of Groundwater 1- Basins
Basins are large shallow depressions where recharge water is stored. Their shape and dimensions are generally adapted to local topography. Many basins need scheduled maintenance to improve the capacity of the bed for infiltration. Artificial recharge using basins is the most widely used method, on account of its practicality and ease of associated maintenance. Saturday, April 23, 2022 4
slide6. Methods of Artificial Recharge of Groundwater 2- Channels
The infiltration potential of rivers and channels is increased by deepening the bed and constructing barrages to enlarge the areal extent of the river bed.
3- Flooding
This method is used on level ground, where waters are spread directly on the natural surface to produce a thin water layer. The ground must retain its natural vegetation cover. Saturday, April 23, 2022 6
slide7. Methods of Artificial Recharge of Groundwater 4- Ditches and furrows
Parallel ditches do not distribute water deeply, and are usually located very close to one another. The excess of recharge water flowing from the ditches is collected in a discharge channel. Ditches vary in width from 0.3–1.8 m; the slope must be very slight to minimize erosion and to increase the wetted section. Saturday, April 23, 2022 7
slide9. Methods of Artificial Recharge of Groundwater 5- Holes or pits
Holes are generally small and relatively shallow, and are used in areas where the ground has low permeability. Abandoned quarries are often used. Suspended solids in the water settle on the bottom of the hole while the walls remain permeable to the recharge water.
6- Wells
By this method water was added to the aquifer directly, there are two factors to consider by wells: efficiency and cost. The cheapest process is to inject recharge water by force after removing the valve from the bottom of the pump. Saturday, April 23, 2022 9
slide11. Advantages of Artificial Recharge of GW 1- The storage capacity of groundwater reservoirs often exceeds the capacity of the surface reservoirs.
2- Keep water against evaporation from the free surface.
3- Groundwater storages are relatively inexpensive which not need hydraulic structures.
4- Do not suffer from the sediment problem that affects the surface reservoirs. Saturday, April 23, 2022 11
slide12. Advantages of Artificial Recharge of GW 5- The passage of water through the geological layers helps to the filtration of water and may use for human consumption.
6-Â Groundwater recharge stores water during the wet season for use in the dry season, when demand is highest.
7-Â Most aquifer recharge systems are easy to operate. Saturday, April 23, 2022 12
slide13. Disadvantages of Artificial Recharge of GW 1-Â Unless significant volumes can be injected into an aquifer, groundwater recharge may not be economically feasible.
2-Â During the construction of water traps, disturbances of soil and vegetation cover may cause environmental damage to the project area.
3- The hydrogeology of an aquifer should be investigated and understood before using any recharge project. Saturday, April 23, 2022 13
