The Church What is the church, who is the church & what is the role of the church?
The word ‘church’ in the NT comes from
The Greek word ἐκκλησία (‘ek-klay-see'-ah’)
The transliteration is spelled ekklēsía

Thayer's Definition of the ‘Church’ A gathering of citizens, called out from their homes into some public place
An assembly of the people convened at the public place of the council for the purpose of deliberating
Any gathering or throng of men assembled by chance, tumultuously in a Christian sense
An assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious meeting
Those who anywhere, in a city, village, constitute such a company, and are united into one body
The whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth
The assembly of faithful Christians already dead, and received into heaven TheExpositor.tv 7
The Church The Biblical church is not the building, it is the body of believers
Nowhere in the Scriptures are Christians told to wait once a year, to bring an unbeliever to a crusade. But the Scriptures do tell us to bring the crusade to them.
Therefore, it is the Biblical duty and calling of Christians (the church,) to ‘go out’ into the world. To be salt of the earth, and light of the world.
The church is to ‘go outside’ the fours walls of that building, that most call the church
The Lords ‘Great Commission’ is Matthew 28:18-20.
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” TheExpositor.tv 9
The Evangelist Sadly today some within the church wrongfully believe that only some are called to evangelize.
They gleam that from Eph 4:11, “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,” Many Christians believe that vs 11 is speaking specifically of spiritual gifts only, and only for some (as does 1st Cor 12:4 & Rom 12:6).
Though some may be more specifically and uniquely gifted to evangelize than some, but we are all generally obligated (indebted) to share the Gospel (Rom 1:14).
The next verse better explains
In context vs 12 makes it clear that vs 11 is “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ,”
That is what we are doing today. Training, equipping, and edifying, for the work of the ministry. TheExpositor.tv 16
The Evangelist In other words
Today Christians are trained up and equipped by pastors, teachers, and evangelists
Not everyone has the specific title of evangelist, but we’re all called to evangelize
All Christians are to do the work of an evangelist, but not all Christians are evangelists
An evangelist possesses a unique ability, to present the Gospel more effectively to unbelievers (but all Christians are called to evangelize)
An evangelist possesses a unique ability to train other believers in evangelism, with the common goal of implementing the Great Commission
As Warren Wiersbe said, “Evangelism is not a toy to play with. It’s a tool to build with.” TheExpositor.tv 17
TheExpositor.tv 18 Boldness, courage & confidence
19
Boldness, courage, or confidence Where does it come from?
Not of ourselves. It all comes from the Lord.
It comes from that 3-D relationship (upward, inward, then outward)
Paul said in 2 Tim 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.’
Paul said Eph 6:19-20, , “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” TheExpositor.tv 19
Boldness, courage, or confidence Joshua 1:9 says, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Duet 31:6 says, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. TheExpositor.tv 20
Boldness, courage, or confidence Regarding our confidence
Paul said in 2 Cor 3: 4-6 says, “And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
Jer 17: 7 says, "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose trust is the LORD.”
Psalms 118:18 says, “It is better to trust in the Lord,Than to put confidence in man.” TheExpositor.tv 21
TheExpositor.tv 22 What does the Bible say about public preaching?
23
The Bible on public preaching It says in Rom 10:14-16, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? [So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God].” TheExpositor.tv 23
24
The Bible on public preaching Acts 1:4-8 says, “And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”Notice their progression from “Jerusalem, then to Judea, then to Samaria, and then to the other ends of the earth?

The Bible on public preaching Let’s look at 1st Tim 4:11-13
Paul told the church in vs 11-13, “These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
Let’s zoom-in on verse 13 “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
Take note of those three commands, ‘reading, exhortation, and to doctrine.’ In vs 13b, The word ‘reading’ comes from the Greek word ἀνάγνωσις (‘anagnōsis’), which also means the act of the public reading of Scripture.
This word reading (anagnōsis) is used three times in the N.T. Here in 1st Tim 4:13, in Acts 13:15, and in 2nd Cor. 3:14. Therefore open-air preachers play a significant role in verse 13b - the public reading of the Scriptures.
A local church that does not obey all three commands, is not a Biblical church. TheExpositor.tv 25
Different styles & methodologies Distribution of Gospel tracts (personal hand to hand preferred)
Using signage (Warning: This can give the appearance of a protest or picketing. We’re not ‘protesters, were ‘proclaimers’)
‘One on one’ conversations (Gospel centered)
Apologetics (Gospel centered)
On the box preaching (Re ‘teaching,” only if you have the ‘gift of teaching.’ Remember a preacher is often a teacher.)
On the box preaching may also include rebuking 2 Tim. 4:2 & Prov 24:25, and Biblical judging John 7:24.
On the box ‘crying out & calling out’ (aka a ‘crier’)
If someone is on the box preaching, be respectful and use wisdom when engaging in conversations with others while the preaching is going on (except for dealing with a Heckler) TheExpositor.tv 28
Different styles & methodologies Contact evangelism versus friendship evangelism
Contact evangelism (proclaiming the Gospel to strangers, and/or confronting the public with the Gospel….…)
Friendship evangelism (sharing the Gospel only after making friends, or only in mutual conversation with friends or strangers….…)
In the book of Acts, there’s at least 46 instances of the early church engaging in evangelism (both contact and friendship)
Of these 46 instances, 38 of them were contact evangelism (that’s 82.6%)
Only 8 were friendship evangelism (17.4%). TheExpositor.tv 29
Different styles & methodologies Points to ponder on
A Biblical Evangelist, must be evangelical
A Christian, bust be Christ-centric
A herald, or preacher (aka a proclaimer of the Gospel,) will be Gospel-centric
What I do strive to accomplish, is to use God’s Word more than mine.
Because Gods’ Word never goes void. The power onto Salvation is in the Gospel, not in my words (Isaiah 55:11, Rom 1:16.)
Many other methodologies (or ministries) are not ‘Gospel-centric,’ they're ‘man-centric.’ TheExpositor.tv 31
Different styles & methodologies TheExpositor.tv 32 “Nowhere in the Scriptures are evangelists (or street preachers) told to first get the worlds permission to preach. Nowhere in the Scriptures are Christians told to accommodate the world. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told to only preach to crowds that are willing to listen. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told to redact, truncate, or replace the preaching of the glorious Gospel with tricks, gimmicks, gadgets, skits, magic, entertainment, cash giveaways, trivia questions, word games, jokes, or comedy. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told do give the heckler a microphone and a box to stand on, so they can blaspheme the Lord and use profanity. We ought to be thankful that these evangelists are out there, but when our evangelism efforts become more man-centric, and less Gospel-centric; it’s no longer orthodox Biblical evangelism.” ~ IPOC Ministries
35
Dealing with Hecklers A Heckler (or Scoffer) is a person that interrupts and mocks the OAP’s sermon (often times using profanities – which could lead to violence)
2 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” TheExpositor.tv 35
36
Dealing with Hecklers Some OAP’s prefer hecklers, others do not
Either way, we must respect and honor each others view
Those that prefer Hecklers, say that Hecklers draw in the crowds
Personally if the Holy Spirit didn’t draw in the crowd, then it may not be the work of the Holy Spirit. It may even be our flesh.
If an OAP prefers to engage with Hecklers, then let the Heckler heckle
But if the OAP prefers to not engage in Hecklers, be respectful and ask the Heckler to step aside to dialog with you
Bear in mind that most Hecklers are trying to shut up the Gospel
Signage can draw in crowds, without the heckler TheExpositor.tv 36
Dealing with Hecklers Use discernment with Hecklers
Know when your ‘engaging of apologetics’ turns into sin
Distracting a Heckler from my OA preaching, may prevent me from sinning
Paul said in 2 Tim 2:24-26, “And the servant of the Lord must not strive [must not be quarrelsome]; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
For me – I prefer to keep preaching to the crowd, while my partner dialogs with the Heckler. Then it’s a win – win! TheExpositor.tv 37
Dealing with Hecklers Chris Raymond of ‘First Baptist Church of the Lakes’ said the following ~
“A herald should not negotiate with an enemy of the cross, who is trying to stop the gospel from going forth. Many falsely assume the public proclamation of the gospel is a conversation, when it is not. A herald is to unroll the scroll, and proclaim what the King has charged, and commanded to the people.”
Raymond’s comment does not surprise me, as his church has men like Paul Washer and Voddie Baucham preach from behind their pulpit. TheExpositor.tv 38
Dealing with the ‘Stop Judging Me’ card You’re going to hear the “Your judging me” card a lot.
True Jesus did say in Matt 7:1-2, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”
But here is the Biblical context of Matt 7:1-2 (Jesus was………..)
We are not necessarily to judge the world, because the unregenerate are doing what is expected from them. However, we are to judge righteously. Jesus said in John 7:24, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
If a sinner’s drunk – then he’s a drunkard (warn him of 1 Cor 6:9)
If a woman walks into an Abortuary, she’s probably not receiving prenatal care (warn her & offer her the alternatives to abortion, and the solutions to her sin problem) TheExpositor.tv 41
Dealing with the ‘Stop Judging Me’ card If a professed believer is in the world i.e. bars ect, then warn them with the Word of God. Warn them of the wrath of God.
James 4:4-5 says, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?”
1 John 2:15-17 says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
Jesus said in John 15:19, “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” TheExpositor.tv 42
Being ready to give an answer If necessary, be ready to rebuke a professed believer (i.e. worldly places, or like the strip club girls below. If interested later, video examples below).
1 Cor 5:12-13 says, ‘For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.”
Paul said in Gal 6:1, “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”
Be ready to Biblically answer their questions, and/or defend your faith.

Paul said in1 Cor 1:17, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words [eloquent], lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.”
We don’t need to be clever with our words. We don’t need tricks, gimmicks, gadgets, skits, magic, entertainment, word games, jokes, or comedy. But we do need the Gospel.
Every five minutes a Christian is martyred for sharing the “Gospel.” How dare we replace the Gospel with extra-biblical ideologies.
Although hero's i.e. Edwards, Whitefield & Spurgeon were known for using catchy clichés to grab their attention… TheExpositor.tv 46
48
TheExpositor.tv 48
49
The Law vs the Gospel The Law is for the unsaved, and the Gospel is for the saved.
The Law is absent the Gospel, but the Gospel is not absent the Law.
In the N.T. they don’t contradict each other, they complement each other.
Pauls’ Pastoral instruction is in 1 Tim 1:8-11, “But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.” TheExpositor.tv 49
50
The Law vs the Gospel It says in Gals 3:19-25, “What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”

A Check up from the neck up Not in a legalistic way, but before you evangelize with our team, ask yourself ~
Am I ‘above reproach?’
Is my reputation in the ‘world,’ as good as it is in ‘church’? (1 Tim 3:7)
Stay in prayer
Stay in the Word
Hold each other accountable
Keep His armor on (Eph 6:10-20)
Be fed and led. Fed by the WORD and led by the Holy Spirit

Dealing with the police Rom 13:1-5 says, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.” TheExpositor.tv 57
Dealing with the police Romans 13 provides only a limited authority to government
Vs 3 says, ‘For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:”
The Lord defines what is good and what is evil
The Biblical Christian, the Church (the bride of Christ) is good, and not evil
When law enforcement departs from their limited authority (or willingly goes against Christ’s bride), they have stepped outside their God ordained authority
Hence, the church does not have to submit to their unbiblical authority, nor unlawful requests
The government and the police, et.al. are ordained to wield the sword against evil doers, and to praise those who do good
They’re not ordained to go against Christ’s bride (but they will and some do) TheExpositor.tv 58
That we’re to respect those Gov authorities over us

We’re not to polish the policeman's boots

Dealing with the police Christians and Churches do not have to obey “the authorities” when,

b) They forbid Christians (or Church) to do what the Bible commands, or
c) They command Christians to do what the Scriptures forbid, or
d) They tell Christians to go against the Scriptures. TheExpositor.tv 60
Acts 5:27-29 says, “And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Dealing with the police Know the ‘laws of the land,’ and know your 1st amendment rights (Christians do not have Christian rights, but in America we do have the Bill of Rights)
Often times the police are wrong, or are haters of Christ
If they’re not saved, they’re enemies of Christ (Col 1:21 & Rom 5:10)
You may have to make that difficult decision, that could get you arrested
Paul said in 1 Cor 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Jude said in Jude 1:3 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

Soteriology We really should devote an entire PowerPoint to this one word.
The term “soteriology” comes from the Greek terms sótéria (salvation and/or deliverance) via a sótér (a Saviour or Deliverer)…
In systematic theology, it refers to the study of the ‘doctrine of salvation.’
“Soteriology, the doctrine of salvation, must be the grandest theme in the Scriptures. It embraces all of time as well as eternity past and future. It relates in one way or another to all of mankind, without exception. It even has ramifications in the sphere of the angels. It is the theme of both the Old and New Testaments. It is personal, national, and cosmic. And it centers on the greatest Person, our Lord Jesus Christ.” Charles Ryrie TheExpositor.tv 66
Soteriology For the purposes of this presentation, let’s fast forward thru the ABC’s of Soteriology, applying it to evangelism…
We are just sowers of His Seed
The Apostle Paul said, “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.” 1st Cor 3:5-8
Which means we don’t manufacture results, nor create results
We don’t ask them to ‘accept Jesus into their heart,’ then declare them saved TheExpositor.tv 67
Soteriology We don’t ask them to give a ‘raise your hand roll-call,’ then declare them saved
We don’t get them to make a decision, then declare them saved
We don’t have them repeat an ‘Unbiblical Sinner’s Prayer,’ then declare them saved (my comprehensive article here https://www.theexpositor.tv/blog/the-sinners-prayer-biblical-or-unbiblical-by-bill-rhetts/)
However, I generally plead to them, to respond to that Gospel call (Christ for salvation)
The Lord adds to His church as He chooses
All the results belong to the Lord, and
All the glory goes to the Lord TheExpositor.tv 68
Soteriology “Salvation is entirely a matter of God’s free, sovereign choice… Nevertheless, it is equally true to say that if a man is not saved, it is because of his own rejection of the gospel which is offered to him.” ~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones.
Evangelism is not a ball game to see how many souls I can profess to win to Christ. Evangelism is a matter of eternal life, or eternal damnation. Only the Lord knows the heart, but in time we can examine the fruit.” ~ Bill Rhetts

Encouraging words from others “If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.” ~ Charles Spurgeon
“Do you want to go to heaven alone? I fear you will never go there. Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you are not saved yourself. Be sure of that.” Charles Surgeon
Disclaimer: I loathe Wesley’s doctrine, but I like the following attitude
“Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on Earth.” ~ John Wesley TheExpositor.tv 71
Encouraging words from others “If the Christian is truly obedient to the Great Commission, he will give his life to go down into the well, or to hold the rope for those who go down. Either way, the rope will be burned into his hands. The depth of the scars will determine the extent of the obedience. Have you surrendered your life to go to the lost peoples of the world, or have you surrendered your life to support those who go? What has the Great Commission cost you? Where are your scars?” - Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society
“In answer to your inquiry, I consider that the chief dangers which confront the coming century will be religion without the Holy Ghost, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, politics without God, and heaven without hell.” – William Booth, Founder of the Salvation Army TheExpositor.tv 72
Encouraging words from others Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said of Whitefield, “They must not wait for souls to come to them. They must go after souls, and compel them to come in. He [Whitefield] did not sit tamely by his fireside…. He dived into holes and corners after sinners. He hunted out people, and their sin, that he might present Christ to them.”
“We are not to preach merely to those who come to listen. We must carry the Gospel to where men do not desire it. We should consider it our business to be generously impertinent—thrusting the Gospel into men’s way—whether they will hear or whether they will not.” - Charles Spurgeon TheExpositor.tv 73
