What is an AED? An AED is a device that is designed to be used by laypeople – not doctors, nurses or paramedics – to try to save the life of someone who is in cardiac arrest. The AED analyses the heart rhythm of the patient – you don’t need to be a doctor or make any decisions about what to do – the AED is a de facto “team leader”.
It will not shock the patient unless they NEED to be shocked.
An AED will not hurt the rescuer if they follow the instructions.
An AED is completely safe to use and does not require you to have specific training or certification to do so.
05
When Do You Use an AED? An AED is used on someone who is in cardiac arrest. When someone is in cardiac arrest, their heart has stopped beating, and is not pumping blood around their body. This person will not survive UNLESS the appropriate steps are taken by bystanders. Doing SOMETHING is better than doing NOTHING!
In most cases of cardiac arrest, if the patient is found soon enough, the patient’s heart is “fibrillating”.
An AED is used to deliver a shock to the patient’s heart, allowing to “reboot” the electrical system that tells the heart to beat. The process of stopping the heart with the shock is known as “defibrillating” the heart.
For each minute that the patient is in cardiac arrest without their heart being defibrillated, their chance of surviving decreases by 10%.
06
Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack Why knowing the difference can save a life Patient is not responding;
They are not breathing normally, or at all
This person’s heart is NOT beating Person is conscious and responding;
Person is breathing and able to move
This person’s heart is beating Heart Attack Cardiac Arrest This is a “plumbing” problem – a blocked or narrowing of the arteries This is an “electrical” problem – a disruption of the heart’s electrical system, that needs to be “reset”.
Use two hands to push hard and fast.
Keep your arms straight and use your bodyweight to push – not pushing from your elbows. Video Removed due file size
Heart of the Nation App Find your nearest AED, and call for help all from one app Set up an account
Select “Become a Responder” Keep the app on your home screen or in a folder so it is easy to access if needed. 3. Hit the “Call 000” button From late Jan, 2022, local responders will be alerted while you are on the phone to 000. They will be guided to the nearest AED, as well as to your location to help. 1 2 3 4. Hit the “Cancel” button if you have made an error, otherwise…
Connecting the Community – Strengthening the Chain A person is found unresponsive and not breathing.
The responder uses their HotN app to call 000 as well as lay-responders in one, simple action.
Via the app, the community confirm they can help, and then receive the address of the event and the nearest AED.
The first responder commences CPR.
One community responder (or more) is dispatched to retrieve the AED.
Other community responders arrive to assist with CPR and the AED is brought to be used.
Advanced paramedic care arrives. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Maintaining Your AED Simple steps! Once a month, do a visual inspection – is the AED where it should be, and is the green “ready” light flashing? 2. Change the battery and pad unit prior to the expiry date. We will send these to you prior to the expiry date. Approximate 4 years from now 3. If the unit is used – that is, the pads are placed on a patient and a shock is not delivered, and/or it is used to deliver a shock - change the battery and pads. We can help you find the right supplier for this. 1 2
