slide2. Guiding Question In the College of Health and Human Development, the following majors require students to take a lower division chemistry (CHEM) course*:
Environmental and Occupational Health (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103)
Kinesiology - Exercise Science (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103)
Health Science - Public Health (CHEM 100 or CHEM 103)
In the Fall of 2018, the overall DFW rates for these chemistry courses were**:
33% for CHEM 100
20% for CHEM 101
21% for CHEM 103
For each major, is there a difference in DFW and repeat rates between the recommended CHEM courses?
*For students to take CHEM 101, they must either have a satisfactory score on the Chemistry Placement Test or a grade of “C” or higher in CHEM 100.

Data from Fall 2012-Fall 2018 were combined (summer classes were excluded)
Only HHD students who were enrolled in each of the three majors at the time they took the chemistry course(s) were included in the analyses.
Introductory chemistry courses recommended for each of the three majors were evaluated based on:
DFW rates
Repeat rates Overview of Data<br>

For all three programs, the DFW rates were lowest for CHEM 103. Therefore, unless students need CHEM 100/101 for graduate school, these programs may want to consider recommending students take CHEM 103 to improve student success.
Implications
Recommending more students take CHEM 103 instead of CHEM 100 or 101 could impact the Chemistry Department
In Spring 19, there are 11 CHEM 100 sections and there is only 1 CHEM 103 section Concluding Thoughts<br>
