The day began with a whisper. Hhhhhh... A baby breeze tiptoed into the village, soft as a secret. It tickled one feather. It turned one leaf. Nobody even noticed. (Not yet.)
02
By breakfast, the breeze had grown into a PUFF. Whiff! Whoo! It ruffled the baker's flour into little clouds and flipped the pages of Grandpa's newspaper — forward, backward, forward again. "Hey!" laughed Grandpa.
03
By mid-morning the puff became a GUST. WHOOSH! Off went the postman's cap, cartwheeling down the lane! Off went the twins' balloons, bouncing along the rooftops! The gust was having a WONDERFUL time.
04
WHIRL! The wind found the washing lines. Shirts filled up like fat sailors. Socks waved goodbye to their partners. One enormous pair of polka-dot bloomers flew over the church like a glorious flag. The whole village pointed and HOWLED with laughter.
05
WHEEE! Now the wind went WILD. It scooped up every leaf in the village and spun them into a golden tornado of confetti. Children ran into it on purpose, arms wide, hair standing straight up like startled brooms.
06
WHOOSH-WHOOSH! The kites! Somebody's kite escaped — then EVERYBODY'S kites escaped, and for one impossible minute the sky above the village was a tangle of dancing diamonds and dragon tails, flying themselves.
07
RATTLE! CLATTER! The wild wind rang the church bell — DONG! — spun every weathervane like a top, and pushed the roundabout in the park so fast that three pigeons rode it round and round, too dizzy to complain.
08
And then... the wind began to yawn. Whoosh... whoo... whiff... It set the hats down gently (mostly on the right heads). It parked the kites in one tall tree, like umbrellas in a stand. It even folded one tea towel. (Badly. But it tried.)
09
By bedtime, the wild wind was a whisper again. Hhhhhh... It rocked the last leaf like a cradle. It hushed the washing lines. It curled up around the chimneys and breathed out, slow and soft. Goodnight, wild one.
10
And here's the secret the wind knows: you can't SEE the wind — not ever. You can only see what it TOUCHES: the leaf, the kite, the flag, the flour. (Science whisper: wind is just air, moving from here to there!) So tomorrow, look for the wind's fingerprints. It leaves them everywhere. The End.
11
Let's talk about it! Sound effects: WHISPER, WHIFF, WHOOSH, WHIRL, WHEEE - say them from softest to wildest!
Can we SEE the wind? What can we see instead?
Science: wind is moving air! Blow a feather - you made wind!
