A Church Divided

Pope Boniface VIII and Philip IV of France disagreed on the issue of Bishops in France.

Boniface declared every one was subjected to the Pope.

Sept 1303,Philip ignored Boniface and made him his prisoner.The Pope was freed but died a month later. The significance of this was that the Popes would never get the monarchs to obey them again.Slide3

Avignon & The Great Schism

1305 Philip convinces the College of Cardinals to select a French archbishop. (Clement V).

Clement moves the Church from Rome to Avignon.

Move weakened the Church.1378 Gregory XI dies. Pope Urban VI is elected. Bad choice and French Cardinals elected another Cardinal to be Pope.Slide4

Great Schism

Due to the elections of Urban VI & Clement VII caused a split in the Church.

One Pope lived in France, the other in Rome.

The Council of Constance met in 1414 to end the Great Schism.1417 all the Popes were forced to resign and a new Pope Martin V was elected ending the Great Schism.Slide5

Challenge to Church Authority

John Wycliffe preached that Jesus Christ was the Head of the Church and not the Pope.

Wycliffe was upset with the wealth and worldliness of the Pope.

Wycliffe stated that the Bible was the final authority on Christian life.Slide6

Challenge to Church Authority

Jan Hus also taught that the Bible was the authority over the Pope.

Hus was excommunicated in 1412.

Burned at the stake in 1415 for his beliefs.Slide7

The Bubonic Plague Strikes

Symptoms

Painful swelling called buboes.

Purplish or blackish spots on the skin.Extreme high fever, chills, deliriumDeath

Effects of the Plague

Returned every few years.

Town populations declined.

Trade declined.

Farmland was abandoned or used for pasture.

Serfs left the manor.

Peasant revolts in England, Italy, France & Belgium.Slide9

The Hundred Years War

Edward III claimed right to the French throne after Philip IV died and left no successor.

This claim caused a war that lasted from 1337 to 1453.

French drove the English out of France between 1421 & 1453.Slide10

The Battle of Crecy

The British won 3 important battles(Crecy, Poitiers & Agincourt): Battle of Crecy was the most spectacular of these.

English archers contributed to the victory .

August 26, 1346. English longbowmen shot many arrows killed or frightened French knights and crossbowmen.Poitiers again defeated the French and captured the French King John .Slide11

Agincourt

Occurred in 1415.

Led by Henry V defeated a heavily underhanded English Army. French had 20,000 soldiers to 6,000 British.

5 years after the Battle of Agincourt , a French peasant girl named Joan of Arc changed the war.Slide12

Joan of Arc

Believed that God spoke to her.

Told her to drive the English out of France and give the crown to Charles VI.

May 7, 1429 led the French army into battle at Orleans.The French were almost defeated when Joan led a charge to French victory.Joan convinced Charles to go to Reims to be crowned King.Slide13

Joan of Arc

Charles was crowned king of France on July 17, 1429.

Captured in 1430 by the

Burgundians. Turned over to the English who turned her over to the Church.Church tried her as a witch. Burned at the stake on May 30, 1431.Slide14

Impact of the War

Raised the power & prestige of the French monarchy.

Nationalism

King was a national leader.England had an internal conflict called the War of The Roses.Strengthen the English Parliament.End of the Middle Ages.Religious devotion and chivalry ended.
