What is a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and why do I need it? A HSG is a special X - ray examination which looks at your uterus (womb) and fallopian tubes. It aims to show whether your uterus is normal and if your fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged. It may explain why you have not been able to get pregnant and it will help your doctor decide the most appropriate treatment for you. How to prepare for your examination In order to perform this examination it is very important that you follow the following instruction.  You must refrain from unprotected sexual intercourse from the start of your period (day 1) until after the procedure .  We cannot perform the examination if you are having your period. Therefore, if your period is due to come at the time of the appointment please let us know immediately so we can reschedule.  You will be asked to change into a gown and will then be taken through to the imaging room.  You may bring someone to the department on the day of the appointment but they will not be able to be in the room during the examination. What happens during the examination? Once in the x - ray room you will meet the specialis t who will conduct the examination, assistant and radiographer. The procedure will be explained to you and any questions answered.  Similar to a smear test, a speculum will be placed in the vagina, after which a small tube will be passed into the uterus it self. A clear fluid, which will show up on x - ray is injected until the best picture of the womb and tubes is obtained.  Some women feel a little period like discomfort, but this wears off quickly.  Once the tube and speculum have been removed a sanitary pad will be put in place to absorb an y of the clear fluid which will leak out . How long will the HSG take? This examination will last between 15 and 30 minutes. What happens after the examination?  After the examination you may get some slight vaginal bleeding (spotting), this is not unusual.  If you have pain you may take the type of pain relief you would usually take for period pains.  You are advised not to wear a

tampon for 48 hours after the proc edure. You can use sanitary towels during this time.  Normal sexual activity can be resumed whenever you are ready to do so What is a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and why do I need it?
