1. LI – to be able to understand the Theory of Evolution- I can demonstrate understanding of how the Theory of Evolution was formed- I can explain the terms adaptation, evolution and natural selection.

2. Who is this person? Why are they on a £10 note? What else is there on the £10 note to give you clues? What do you think they are famous for?

3. 4th March 1831Dear Mr Darwin,It gives me great pleasure, as the Captain of HMS Beagle, to invite you aboard my ship to take part in a around-the-world voyage. I understand that you are fascinated by living things and would like to explore the lands beyond the sea. We are scheduled to depart from Portsmouth in six weeks times and have prepared a cabin for yourself and additional space in the hold to contain your samples that you wish to bring back. I trust that you will accept this invitation for a one in a lifetime opportunity and look forward to meeting you aboard my ship six weeks from now. Yours sincerelyCaptain Robert Fitzroy HMS Beagle

4. 17th September 1835Dear Diary,After four long years of sailing aboard the Beagle, we have finally arrived at the Galapagos Islands. We used the longboat to sail to the smaller islands that make up the Galapagos and I identified and sketched out new species of birds that I encountered. It was when I was sketching a particular bird – the Galapagos finch – that I realised I had seen a different variety of this bird before, but it was different to the other bird. I mean, they were the same species, but they had slight differences. How could this happen when the birds live on the Galapagos islands? What has allowed them to become different… I must explore this further.

5. Dear Diary,I have a theory that something such as bad weather on one of the islands affected the plants and only plants with the larger seeds were left. Therefore, when the offspring were born, the finches with larger beaks were able to eat the seeds whilst those with smaller beaks were unable to. The finches who could not eat the seeds with their beaks did not survive and after that, only finches with large beaks were born to the parents. I am going to call this idea ‘survival of the fittest’. 21st September 1835

6. Dear Diary,Having had the opportunity to explore the islands, I have come up with a name for this theory, the ‘Theory of Evolution. Over time, animals need to change their characteristics, their beak, the wings or even the size of the eyes to adapt to their local environment. This will explain why some of the finches still have their small beaks because there were still small seeds there whilst the other finches had to adapt to eating larger seeds – this means their beaks grew bigger over time. 2nd October 1835

7. Dear Diary,The final part of my theory is the idea of ‘natural selection’. This means that living things either adapt to their environment and change to keep being able to stay alive whilst others will die off (become extinct). This also is the same as my idea the ‘survival of the fittest’. 7th October 1835

8. ActivityCreate a leaflet or write a letter persuading that you will send to a friend persuading them that your theory of Evolution is correct and you can prove it. Use the information from the lesson and the sketches of the birds done by Darwin to help you.

9. Thick fur to protect skin from the sun. Thin fur on the rest of the body to help keep cool.Large flat feet to spread their weight on the sand. Stores fat in its hump which it converts to water.
