The entire country came together duringWorld War I to help the soldiers whowere overseas. Women who could not serve as soldiers took jobs in factories when soldiers went overseas. Factories that would not hire African Americans now hired them to help keep up with the demand. These factories made tanks, guns, uniforms and other supplies needed by the military. People rationed, or limited, the amount of metal and cloth they used, in order to send more to the soldiers. African Americans and Asian Americans were allowedto serve in the military in World War II. However, bothAfrican Americans and Japanese Americans served inseparate units away from white soldiers. Many wereforced to be cooks and dig ditches, instead of fight. However, many others fought with honor and even flewplanes in the war effort.In the year 1941,

Even though African Americans were now “citizens” bylaw, they were not allowed to vote in most southern states. Most southern states had rules and laws that stoppedAfrican Americans from voting. For example, in somestates, people had to take a test before they could vote.In the year 1940,

The NAACP or National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had been formed to work towards equalrights for African Americans. (African Americans were then called “colored people”.)
