Unit Introduction

To assess the technical and tactical

skills of yourselves and others,

and plan

your own development. Look at the technical skills and tactics required in selected sports. Look at professional sports performers and their abilities in the areas their sports demand. Examine your own abilities in competitive situations over a period of time. Look at your development, technically and tactically.Slide3

assignments

Assignment 1

: Produce a poster explaining the technical and tactical demands of three different sports.

Assignment 2: Create an observation checklist and observe the performance of an elite sports performer, describing their strengths and areas for improvement. Assignment 3: Create an observation checklist and observe your own performance, creating a personal development plan for yourself.Slide4

Learning objectives

By the end of the lesson you must be able to;

Describe the difference between a technique & a skill

and provide examples.

Describe what is a fine skill and what is a gross skill. Categorise fine and gross skills and some will provide justifications.Slide6

What is the Difference between a Technique & skill?

What do you think is the difference between a technique and a skill?

Write down your definitionSlide7

Definition of a technique & a skill

SKILL –

Skill

is an athlete's ability to choose and perform the right techniques at the right time, successfully, regularly and with a minimum of effort.

TECHNIQUE – Techniques are the basic movements of any sport or event e.g. a block start in a 100 metre race is a technique. We combine a number of techniques into a pattern of movement e.g. triple jump - running and then the hop, step and jump phases.Slide8

Fine and Gross Motor Skills

Motor skills are all about the movement of the body. There are two different types of motor skills:

Gross motor skills

are

major bodily movements, normally associated with:StrengthEndurancePowerSporting examples are; jumping to catch a ball, running up as a fast bowler.Fine motor skills require small muscular movements. They include small, precise movements that take a lot of time to learn, practice and refine.Sporting examples are; Spin Bowling, Snooker, Darts.Slide11

Fine and Gross Motor Skills Continued

Usually sport specific skills are not define as just gross or just fine. We must place them on a scale to see how much the skill is fine or gross.

E.G.…A goalkeeper coming to collect a cross from the air…

Fine

…………………………..……X……….GrossSlide12

Where would you place these Motor Skills on the Scale?

Learning objectives

By the end of the lesson you must be able to;

Describe what is a continuous skill

and provide examples

.Describe what is a discrete skill and provide examples.Describe what is a serial skill and provide examples.Be able to breakdown a skill.Slide17

Continuous, Discrete and Serial Skill

Continuous Skill: An action that is repeated over and over such as running, swimming, cycling.

Discrete Skill:

The opposite of continuous skills. They have a clear beginning and end like a serve in tennis. The skill is repeated once complete. Discrete skills are broken down into 3 phases like this…

Preparation – Include the ball toss, the back swing, looking at the ball.Execution – The action of hitting the ball – swing the racket forward, straightening of the arm in a throwing action, etcRecovery – The follow through of the hitting arm, as it bends in front of the body, the position of landing, etc.Serial Skill: A group of discrete skills strung together to make a new and complex movement. i.e. the sequence of skills for the triple jump.Which is this?Slide18
Slide19

Activity - Video

Write down the techniques you witness within the video. You will then be given a quiz to assess how much information you have gathered.

Shooting in BasketballSlide20

Quiz Questions

1. What does B.E.E.F. stand for? 2. What shape does your hands need to take when holding the ball?

3. Why does his right foot need to be slightly in front of his left foot?

4. If the player is right handed, what elbow needs to be ‘tucked in’?

5. When throwing the ball, what does the player need to do to complete the technique?Slide21

Tactics of sport

Unit 27: Technical & Tactical Skills in SportSlide27

Learning objectives

By the end of the lesson you must be able to;

1. Explore

different formations in football

2. Explore different strategies in football3. Explore the tactical components for two other sportsSlide28

Tactics

Plans set up for specific purposes during matches.

Usually discussed before a game.

A strategy is what you want to achieve and a tactic is how you will meet this objective.

Examples Tennis – to move your opponent around the court Football – to defend deep to prevent the opposition scoring (‘parking the bus’)Slide29

Tactics of Football

Write down the definitions of these tactics.

State when and why they are typically used;

‘Park the bus’

Counter attack Possession play ‘Route one’ High pressure ‘Gung–ho’ Overlapping full backsSlide30

Activity - managers

Pick your top 5 managers (current/past)

Write down:

Favoured formation Playing style Specific tacticsSlide31

Activity - formations

Pick a formation and identify the following …

Strengths

Weaknesses

Types of players needed in certain positions Style of play suited to the formation (attacking/defensive/possession etc)

31Slide32

Activity – animal team

1. Pick your favourite formation2. Within the formation, state the type of players you would want in each

position

and why

3. Write down the tactics of your teamSlide33

Meer cat

– Tall, Agile, very good at looking up and reading play

Elephant

– Wisest of them all with lots of experience, but very slow.

Greyhound – Nasty Player, Rough and Aggressive play but a threat of being sent off.Chimpanzee – Very well co-ordinated with feet and hands, but can be very immature.

Hippo – Lazy, doesn’t move around much but holds the ball up well.

Giraffe

– Very good at Heading and quick in a straight line, slow at turning.

Mouse

– Isn’t the best of players, but will work extremely hard for you.

Rhino

– Runs in straight lines with frightening pace, Fatigues quickly though

.

Camel

– Very elegant, very technical, but a slow decision maker.

Cheetah

– Lightening

quick

, but very little technical ability

.

Sheep

– Appears to hide away from the ball against big players, but technically very sound.

Silver Back Gorilla

– Rough and Aggressive player, bosses anything within his perimeter

.

Pig

– Loves getting muddy and dirty, excellent block tackler and slowing opposition down.

33Slide34

Activity – tactics of different sports

Research 4 different tactics of two sports (not football)

Describe each tactic and how it would benefit the team

Write down how the opposition would counter these tacticsSlide35

From the previous lesson, write down;

5 different types of skills in cricket

5 different tactics in cricket

List strategies that can counter the following … Good pitch for spin bowlers Chasing down a big score of over 600 Opposition playing for a draw (opposition batting on the last day of the test)Slide57

Factors that affect performance of technical skills

In your workbook, complete Task

Two

Write down the specific factors that can affect performance in

2 different sportsFor example: Climate can affect performance in football as players may be used to certain climates. Hotter temperatures may cause fatigue at a rate that is earlier than usual e.g. David Beckham at the 2006 World Cup EXTENSION: Give an example of when this has happenedSlide58

Factors that affect tactics

In your workbook, complete Task

Three

Write down the specific factors that can affect tactics in sport

Use 2 different sportsFor example: The pitch is bobbly and uneven, which prevents teams from passing. Tactics are then changed to a more direct style of football to gain the best performance & resultEXTENSION: Give an example of when this has happenedSlide59

Activity - scenarios

Using the following 3 sports;

Pick

5 scenarios for each sport, giving an indication of an appropriate tactic that could be used. Make sure that you explain why you would apply these tactics, with expected outcomes.  Here are some scenarios…

Observation checklists

Unit 27: Technical & Tactical Skills in SportSlide61

Learning objectives

By the end of the lesson you must be able to

;

Describe why we analyse performance Produce a performance profile for tennis Produce a performance profile for footballSlide62

Observational analysis

The perfect model is a mental image of the correct technique.

Sometimes

a video or photographic image can be used to compare with a live performance. However, good coaches will know what they are looking for whenever they

observe a sportsperson perform and will be able to describe the perfect model when giving feedback. Whenever you analyse a performance you should look for strengths and weaknesses. Once you are ready to provide feedback be sure to talk about the good things you have seen before correcting any weaknesses. Beginners only need small amounts of feedback at key times. All performers should be given time to consider their own feelings about the performance rather than being told what they should think. Feedback should always motivate the performer as well as correct the technique.Slide63

What is Notational analysis?

Hand

notation is a system of recording detailed analysis of a sport and literally noting the data on a sheet of paper using a predefined set of symbols.

Notation

is a way of collecting data and can be done by hand or with a computer.Slide77

Tally charts

Tally charts are used by observers to record results of a specific performance

Using

the

tally system to record your results is faster than writing out words or figures all the time If you record your findings in a tally chart, the data is already collected into groups, and you will not need to group it later onSlide78
