Mystery Solving Terms
Alibi- a person or situation proving a suspect was unable to commit the crime.
Deduction- the act of adding up information to form a logical hypothesis

Logic- using reasoning skills
Evidence- proof

Herrings- fake clues
Suspect- person thought to have committed a crime.
Witness- someone who saw the crime or has inside information Slide6
Types of Mystery Fiction/TV
Police Procedural- Main characters are in law enforcement and have to follow law enforcement rules- getting a search warrant, etc.
Private Investigators – are hired by people to solve crimes- they may not follow the law.

Types Cont’d
Cozy Mysteries- less action, usually revolves around logic rather than danger and action.
Thriller/Suspense- may follow the character being chased rather than the one chasing. The stakes may be the character’s life, if they don’t get to the bottom of the mystery.
Medical Mystery/Historical Mystery. Slide8
Unsolved Mysteries- grab our attention because we want to know what happened. Slide9
Legends
Stories that have been passed down, typically over generations.
Cryptozoology
(study of mysterious creatures) falls in this category.
Ghost stories
and paranormal creatures
fall into this category as well.
Robin Hood and King Arthur- who were both based on real people fall into this category because the stories about them can’t all be real. (Probably).Slide10
