Ureters Function

One of the two uterine tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

About 10 to 12 inches long.

Urine flows down partly by gravity but mainly by waves of contractions, which pass several times per minute.Slide3

Urethra Function

Tube that conveys urine from urinary bladder to outside of body.

Lined with mucous membranes and contains a relatively thick layer of muscle tissue.

Females is about 4 cm long.

Passes forward from the bladder descends below

syphysis

puibs

and empties into the labia minor.Slide4

Kidney

Gets rid of wastes and excess water in the from of urine.

Other urinary system organs help transport urine and release it.

Are bean shaped and same size of a persons clenched fist.

Each kidney has 1 million tiny filters called

nephrons

.

They help clean the blood of wastes and remove excess water, waste products, and excess water constitutes the urine.Slide5

bladder

Stores urine that is produced by the kidney and excretes it from the body

When your bladder is full, the nerves in your bladder send a signal through, up to the spinal cord and to the brain

The will send a signal back telling the Sphincter to relax and the detrusor muscle to contractSlide6

Sickle cell effect on the bladder

Can cause Enuresis(bedwetting)

-This means that the kidneys no longer concentrate urine like they should

Can result in:

- larger amounts of urine

-Going to the bathroom to empty bladder

-Bedwetting, even though you don’t drink a lot before you go to bedSlide7

Diabetes Effect On Urinary System

It can cause underactive bladder to overactive bladder to even urinary incontinence.Slide8

UTI and How It Effects the Urinary System

Germs get into your system through your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body.

The infection lives inside of your large intestine and are found in your stool.

If the germs get inside your urethra, they can travel up into your bladder and kidneys cause infection.

Can also lead to bladder infection.

Women tend to get more bladder infections then men.

Women have shorter urethras, so it is easier for germs to get into your urethra.

You are more likely to get an infections if you don’t drink enough fluids.
