1. Alcohol as a social issue. Katrzyna Bigun

2. Definition of alcoholism "A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations."

3. 5 types of Alcoholics:Young adult alcoholics This type of alcoholic is not likely to seek treatment for their alcohol abuse problem. Many deny that it is an issue and instead define it as a lifestyle choice, appropriate for their age group or that they are just “having a good time.”

4. Young antisocial alcoholicsThe study places 21 percent of alcoholics into this group. These people:Are in their mid-20sStarted drinking earlyCome from families with alcoholismAlso use other substances, such as cigarettes, marijuana or heroin Alcohol may help them to stay calm and collected, which they might find difficult to do when they are sober.

5. Functional alcoholics People who are functional alcoholics tend to violate many of the commonly held assumptions about people who are alcoholics. For example, people in this group tend to be well educated, and they also tend to have stable jobs and family lives. On the outside, these people may seem as though they have their lives completely under control, and their friends and colleagues might also not feel as though there are any risk factors for alcoholism that should be of concern. However, people with functional alcoholism might also have difficulty controlling how much they drink, and they might face some consequences from their drinking.

6. Intermediate familial alcoholics The defining characteristic of this type of alcoholic is the high likelihood that their alcohol problem may in part be caused by a genetic predisposition to the development of the disorder and the high number of family members who also struggle with alcoholism.

7. Chronic severe alcoholics About 9 percent of alcoholics can be placed into this group, they tend to have issues that are extremely difficult to resolve or to deal with. Many people in this group are associated with mental illnesses, including:DepressionAnti-social personality disorderBipolar disorderAnxiety disorders
