The outcome of this tension is shaped by collective actions and institutions. The interconnectedness of local, state/national and global levels is crucial for understanding both collective actions and institutions. Chapter 2: Social Progress…a Compass We set out the main normative dimensions that should be used in assessing whether societies have made social progress. We identify dimensions that are of basic or non-derivative importance.
