Slide2General Topics under discussion
Education
(Victoria Garcia-Sakai, Reiner Zorn)Awards (all, later on executing subgroup)User organisation (all)Industrial users (Marc Thiry, Caroline Boudou)New user communities (all)Assessment (all)Best practice (all)
Slide3Education
Funding for e-learning, maintain existing portal and further develop it (instrument training), highly complementary to schools. Should be promoted further through LENS (all).
Costs need to be assessed.Funding of neutron schools, level compared to previous EU programs; most schools benefit with either small help or are highly dependant on funding.LENS school with specific focus on gaps: new user communities or mission related, specific needs (example: data analysis on QENS)Survey the user on schools and training to monitor effectiveness. WP to create virtual instruments for each facility so that training courses can be done in the shutdowns.Collection of scientific highlights from all facilities (PowerPoint slides); generic slides on ‘why neutrons’, ‘how to get neutrons & where’, etc…
Slide4Awards
Main objectives: Raising the visibility of LENS, promoting diversity in neutron usage
Existing neutron related international prizes: Hälg Prize 10.000CHF; Levy Berthaut 1500€; Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award 2072 CHFLENS Mission Award: Addressing Grand Challenges where major achievement is based on the use of neutron researchCriteria scientific achievement with impact on Science discipline, societal or economic impact, education, collaboration on international levelPrize: 5000€ Prize ceremony at LENS GA or at a subject-specific meeting. Prize lecture during the meeting, broad communication by LENS communication group, News on web-pages, Newsletter, press releases, video story of the winner and topic. Award could be annually on any frequency, starting proposition every two years, Nominations for a topic as defined by the GA; selection committee defined by EB: submission criteria depends on topic (publications, patens, etc.).
Slide5User Organisation
Not duplication existing
initiatives: existing network / meeting between UO staff. Next will be organised by ELI in Prague in April 2020. Suggestion of organisation under the Association of European-Level Research Infrastructures Facilities (ERF-AISBL)LENS topicsCan we list and possibley coordinate National and European user meetings?Developing an independent profile against national and international neutron conferences (ECNS, ICNS) Link to additional activities like education, schoolsAccess modes for users to instruments, experiment operation, remote access; exchange of experience.
Slide6Industrial users
Continuation of successful
SINE2020 activitiesNetwork of European neutron facilities‘ ILO (coordinated action with LEAPS)Exchange of feasibility requests from industryExpand industrial case studies library (LENS homepage)Further actionsApproaching dedicated industrial sectors (pharma, engineering, batteries) and focused techniques (imaging, analytics, irradiation). Synergy with „LENS ambassador programme“Promotion material dedicated to industry within one yearFuture projectsApplication of EU project regarding industrial service (together with LEAPS)Lobbying for new funding schemes like Swedish VINNOVA programme – focus on industry (companies are funded for the use of large scale facilities
in collaboration with academic partners)
Slide7Industrial users
Resources
required1 FTE as ILO in each facility for the first 3 years with the goal to be self-sustaining and expanding in future (income by industry projects)Funding for one annual meeting of ILO (collaboration with LEAPS): 6kEUR/yearMaintainance of
case study library: Communication officer 3-4 weeks/yearpublishing existing and new case studies to LENS corporate identity (Brightness2 support?)Staff to attend and present at on-neutron events and roadshows („LENS ambassador programme“): ILOs + scientists, effort
tbd.
Slide8New User communities
LENS Ambassador
ProgrammeEncourage lecture series around universities; Commission some experts in topics & neutrons to deliver seminars at key places / country tour / non-neutron conferencesLENS funds the lecture tours.Promotion at conferences, performed by a booth of one LENS partner including LENS promotion material Neutron PathfinderUseful for proposal sharing Value and application needs further evaluation, would require significant resourcesNeeds analysis on benefits of WayForLightOther methods of introducing new users may be more effectiveStrong link to education activities WG2.2
Slide9Assessment
Discussion and exchange of experience in establishment of
KPI for evaluation and reporting purpose. Added value by harmonisation of some statistics.Exchange of data between LENS partners for evaluation and reporting purposes.Impact of neutron RIHow to demonstrate impact more widely to the external community, including societal impact, return on investment, etc. Exchange and discussions of EU-programs and initiatives.
Slide10Best practice
Best practice in research infrastructure management
Networking of RI managers (LENS and other organisations)Staff training; webinarsStaff exchange of infrastructure managers, technical staff and scientistsEngage with RAMIRI / RITRAIN EU projects.
