The Black death would claim the lives of about 20 million Europeans…give or take a few.

The existence of black plague wasn’t unbeknown to Europeans. They had heard of a “great pestilence that had ravished the Near and Far East.
(These places): China, India, Persia, Syria, and Egypt.
There is a study published in National Geographic that states that Plague may have originated in Egypt.

Not only people were victims to the black death.
Chicken, cows, goats, pigs, and sheep were victims as well.
So many sheep were lost that there was a wool shortage in Europe.
Healthy people eventually began to abandon their sick loved ones in hopes of securing their own survival.
Doctors eventually began to refuse to visit with the sick

The less scientifically and technologically advanced society that existed in Europe during the plague thought that there could be only one reason for the plague….God was upset with them for a number of reasons.

Blasphemy- basically saying bad stuff about God.
Heresy-beliefs or
ideas contrary to orthodox religion, in this case Christianity.
Fornication- Brown-Chicken Brown-Cow before marriage.
Worldliness- being of or related to the world contrasting with Heaven and spiritual life (secular)

The belief that purging heretics would bring about salvation resulted in thousands of Jews being murdered.
Thousands more left Western Europe for the Eastern Europe.

A group of people wanted to show penance for their behavior and regain God’s favor.
To do this these individuals who became known as Flagellants.
They would beat themselves with heavy leather straps with metal studs.

Move to a new town and begin again.
They worried the Pope.

By 1350 the plague had mostly run it’s course, though it did make several appearances throughout History.
Today due to modern sanitation and vastly improved public heath practices the Black Death has been mitigated, though it has not been eliminated…
