(BOOS)-Socialist Heritage: The Politics of Past and Place in Romania (New Anthropologies: Transcript

Focusing on Romania from 1945 to 2016 Socialist Heritage explores the socialist states attempt to create its own heritage as well as the legacy of that project Contrary to arguments that the socialist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe aimed to erase the prewar history of the socialist cities Emanuela Grama shows that the communist state in Romania sought to exploit the past for its own benefit The book traces the transformation of a central district of Bucharest the Old Town from a socially and ethnically diverse place in the early 20th century into an epitome of national history under socialism and then starting in the 2000s into the historic center of a European capital Under socialism politicians and professionals used the districts historic buildings especially the ruins of a medieval palace discovered in the 1950s to emphasize the citys Romanian past and erase its ethnically diverse history Since the collapse of socialism the cultural and economic value of the Old Town has become highly contested Bucharests middle class has regarded the district as a site of tempting transgressions Its poor residents have decried their semidecrepit homes while entrepreneurs and politicians have viewed it as a source of easy money Such arguments point to recent negotiations about the meanings of class political participation and ethnic and economic belonging in todays Romania Gramas rich historical and ethnographic research reveals the fundamentally dual nature of heritage every search for an idealized past relies on strategies of differentiation that can lead to further marginalization and exclusion. Regional Challenges: A Romanian Perspective Thursday, April 3, 2008 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm Hoover Building, Room 100 Prince Radu is visiting the Bay Area as special representative of the Romanian gov The troubling dynamic of the American home care industry where increased independence for the elderly conflicts with the well being of caregivers Paid home care is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and millions of Americans rely on these workers to help them remain at home as they grow older. However, the industry is rife with contradictions. The United States spends a fortune on medical care, yet devotes comparatively few resources on improving wages, thus placing home care providers in the ranks of the working poor. As a result, the work that enables some older Americans to live independently generates profound social inequalities.Inequalities of Aging explores the ways in which these inequalities play out on the ground as workers, who are disproportionately women of color and immigrants, earn poverty-level wages and often struggle to provide for themselves and their families. The ethnographic narrative reveals how two of the nation\'s most pressing concerns--rising social inequality and caring for an aging population--intersect to transform the lives of older adults, home care workers, and the world around them. The book takes readers inside the homes and offices of people connected to two Chicago area home care agencies serving low-income and affluent older adults, respectively. Through intimate portrayals of daily life, Elana D. Buch illustrates how diverse histories, care practices, and social policies overlap and contribute to social inequality.Illuminating the lived experience of both workers and their clients, Inequalities of Aging shows the different ways in which the idea of independence both connects and shapes the lives of the elderly and the working poor. The Palace of Culture and Science is a massive Stalinist skyscraper that was gifted to Warsaw by the Soviet Union in 1955. Framing the Palace\'s visual, symbolic, and functional prominence in the everyday life of the Polish capital as a sort of obsession, locals joke that their city suffers from a Palace of Culture complex. Despite attempts to privatize it, the Palace remains municipally owned, and continues to play host to a variety of public institutions and services. The Parade Square, which surrounds the building, has resisted attempts to convert it into a money-making commercial center. Author Michal Murawski traces the skyscraper\'s powerful impact on 21st century Warsaw on its architectural and urban landscape on its political, ideological, and cultural lives and on the bodies and minds of its inhabitants. The Palace Complex explores the many factors that allow Warsaw\'s Palace to endure as a still-socialist building in a post-socialist city.
