[BOOK]-Progressivism: The Strange History of a Radical Idea: Transcript

Bradley C S Watson has devoted a significant part of his career to studying the nature of American progressivism as it formed in the twentieth century and this book represents his synthesis of the history of this idea In Progressivism The Strange History of a Radical Idea Watson presents an intellectual history of American progressivism as a philosophicalpolitical phenomenon focusing on how and with what consequences the academic discipline of history came to accept and propagate itThis book offers a meticulously detailed historiography and critique of the insularity and biases of academic culture It shows how the first scholarly interpreters of progressivism were in large measure also its intellectual architects and later interpreters were in deep sympathy with their premises and conclusions Too many scholarly treatments of the progressive synthesis were products of it or at least were insufficiently mindful of two central facts the hostility of progressive theory to the Founders Constitution and the tension between progressive theory and the realm of the private including even conscience itself The constitutional and religious dimensions of progressive thoughtand in particular the relationship between the twoin effect remained hidden for much of the twentieth century This pathbreaking volume reveals how and why this scholarly obfuscation occurred The book will interest students and scholars of American political thought the Progressive Era and historiography and it will be a useful reference work for anyone in history law and political science. There they experimented with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically & mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms growing near dung of ungulate herds occupying the savannas & grasslands. Referencing the research of Roland L. Fisher, he claims the enhancement of visual acuity was an effect of psilocybin at low doses & suggests this would confer adaptive advantage. He argues that the effects of slightly larger doses, including sexual arousal, & in larger doses, ecstatic hallucinations & glossolalia — gave selective evolutionary advantages to members of those tribes who partook of it. There were many changes caused by the introduction of this psychoactive to primate diets. He hypothesizes, for instance, that synesthesia (the blurring of sensory boundaries) caused by psilocybin led to the development of spoken language: the ability to form pictures in another person\'s mind through the use of vocal sounds. About 12,000 years ago, further climate changes removed psilocybin-containing mushrooms from human diets. He argues that this event resulted in a new set of profound changes in our species as we reverted to the previous brutal primate social structures that had been modified and/or repressed by frequent consumption of psilocybin. The Strange World of Human Sacrifice is the first modern collection of studies on one of the most gruesome and intriguing aspects of religion. The volume starts with a brief introduction, which is followed by studies of Aztec human sacrifice and the literary motif of human sacrifice in medieval Irish literature. Turning to ancient Greece, three cases of human sacrifice are analysed: a ritual example, a mythical case, and one in which myth and ritual are interrelated. The early Christians were the victims of accusations of human sacrifice, but in turn imputed the crime to heterodox Christians, just as the Jews imputed the crime to their neighbours. The ancient Egyptians rarely seem to have practised human sacrifice, but buried the pharaoh\'s servants with him in order to serve him in the afterlife, albeit only for a brief period at the very beginning of pharaonic civilization. In ancient India we can follow the traditions of human sacrifice from the earliest texts up to modern times, where especially in eastern India goddesses, such as Kali, were long worshipped with human victims. In Japanese tales human sacrifice often takes the form of self-sacrifice, and there may well be a line from these early sacrifices to modern kamikaze. The last study throws a surprising light on human sacrifice in China. The volume is concluded with a detailed index This is a new edition of the classic examination of major philosophical, ethical, scientific and economic roots of environmental problems which examines the ways that radical ecologists can transform science and society in order to sustain life on this planet. It features a new Introduction from the author, a thorough updating of chapters, and two entirely new chapters on recent Global Movements and Globalization and the Environment.
