The Enlightenment. 2. The Industrial Revolution. The Enlightenment (18. th. c.). “Age of Reason”. There’s no doubt that Chicago was distinctive, and has been ever since. The real distinction was not making price theory the focal point of the graduate curriculum. That isn’t the real distinction at all. The fundamental distinction is treating economics as a serious subject versus treating it as a branch of mathematics, and treating it as a scientific subject as opposed to an aesthetic subject, if I might put it that . With one of the foremost authorities on sociological theory as lead author, this book gives a comprehensive overview of the major classical theorists and schools of sociological thought. Key theories are integrated with biographical sketches of theorists, placing readings in context. This set contains the two authoritative textbooks Contemporary Sociological Theory, 3rd Edition and Classical Sociological Theory, 3rd Edition. The third edition of Contemporary Sociological Theory is the definitive guide to current perspectives and approaches in the field, examining key topics and debates in the field. The new edition of Classical Sociological Theory explores the roots of sociology from its undisciplined beginnings to its current influence on contemporary sociological debate. Intended for one-semester, junior/senior-level courses in Contemporary Sociological Theory, or in a Classical and Contemporary Theory course, this text examines the assumptions and concepts of the five major sociological theories and the classical roots of the modern theories. In an accessible and thoughtful manner, this anthology--an update of Social and Political Theory: Classical Readings (1998)--introduces students to the key classic texts in social thought. In the second edition, Michael Kimmel focuses more specifically on the discipline of sociology, ratherthan melding classical sociological and political theories in one volume. Taking a serious look at the canonical texts, he presents a diverse range of thinkers who were critical to the development of sociological theory and offers a more inclusive classical canon that is informed by both thehistorical record and the needs of contemporary students. Many of the classical theorists whose works are included here were much more influential than the canon suggested. For example, the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, Frederick Douglass, Margaret Fuller, and W.E.B Du Bois were widely disseminated and discussed in their time, yet they were pushed tothe margins of the canon, declared to be derivative or second-rate. In attempting to set the record a bit straighter, Kimmel restores these and other forgotten thinkers to the positions they once held. The questions they posed are among the most vital theoretical and political questions of our era, evidence that classical social and political theory continues to speak to new generations of students about the issues that most affect their lives. Features new to the second edition: * Selections of key texts by Auguste Comte (Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte) Edmund Burke (Reflections on the Revolution in France) John Dewey (Democracy and Education) and Elsie Clews Parsons (Women in Public Life) * Stronger disciplinary focus within sociologyClassical Social Theory, Second Edition, is an ideal text for courses in the theory of sociology, the history of social theory, the history of political thought, and western philosophy.
http://amazingbooks.space/?book=B085RCQQNY This comprehensive collection of classical sociological theory is a definitive guide to the roots of sociology. The Reader traces the evolution of social science from its undisciplined beginnings to current guideposts and reference points in contemporary sociological debate. When Sociological Impressionism was first published in 1981, it was the first comprehensive study on Simmel s social theory to appear in English since 1925. A pioneering work, it did much to bring about the rediscovery of Georg Simmel as one of the key sociologists of the twentieth century. David Frisby provides a provocative introduction to aspects of Simmel s social theory, seriously challenging many interpretations of his work, most notably the view that Simmel produced a formal sociology. By drawing on many little-known essays and pieces by Simmel and his contemporaries, the book locates him within the social and intellectual milieu in which he was working. This is a reissue of the second edition, published in 1992, which includes a new afterword confronting critical responses to the first edition. This is an important work, which will be of interest to students of sociology and social philosophy in Germany in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
