(EBOOK)-The Instruction of Imagination: Language as a Social Communication Technology: Transcript

The book suggests a new perspective on the essence of human language This enormous achievement of our species is best characterized as a communication technology not unlike the social media on the Net today that was collectively invented by ancient humans for a very particular communicative function the instruction of imagination All other systems of communication in the biological world target the interlocutors senses language allows speakers to systematically instruct their interlocutors in the process of imagining the intended meaning instead of directly experiencing it This revolutionary function has changed human life forever and in the book it operates as a unifying concept around which a new general theory of language gradually emerges Dor identifies a set of fundamental problems in the linguistic sciences the nature of words the complexities of syntax the interface between semantics and pragmatics the causal relationship between language and thought language processing the dialectics of universality and variability the intricacies of language and power knowledge of language and its acquisition the fragility of linguistic communication and the origins and evolution of language and shows with respect to all of them how the theory provides fresh answers to the problems resolves persistent difficulties in existing accounts enhances the significance of empirical and theoretical achievements in the field and identifies new directions for empirical research The theory thus opens a new way towards the unification of the linguistic sciences on both sides of the cognitivesocial divide. There are a lot of stories about creatures that can talk. We usually assume that they are fantasy (vision) or fiction (invented story) or that they involve birds or animals simply imitating something they have heard humans say. As I creaked the door open it wailed like a rusty spring which hadn’t been oiled in years and I sprang back in fright. . They sense that within their everyday worlds, they cannot overcome their troubles, and in this feeling, they are often quite correct. . noble Ubiquitouscomputing has a vision of information and interaction being embedded in theworld around us this forms the basis of this book. Built environments aresubjects of design and architects have seen digital elements incorporated intothe fabric of buildings as a way of creating environments that meet the dynamicchallenges of future habitation. Methods forprototyping interactive buildings are discussed and the theoretical overlapsbetween both domains are explored. Topics like the role of space and technologywithin the workplace as well as the role of embodiment in understanding howbuildings and technology can influence action are discussed as well as investigating the creation of place with new methodologies toinvestigate the occupation of buildings and how they can be used to understandspatial technologies. Architectureand Interaction is aimed at researchers and practitioners in the field of computing who want togain a greater insight into the challenges of creating technologies in thebuilt environment and those from the architectural and urban design disciplineswho wish to incorporate digital information technologies in future buildings.
