[EBOOK]-Webley Air Pistols: Their History and Development: Transcript
Despite a long history of involvement in the design and production of firearms the Birmingham firm of Webley Scott is probably better known to the general public for its manufacture of airguns than for any other product Until now there has been no published reference that concentrates exclusively on the history and development of Webley air pistols This book has been prepared to offer a comprehensive guide for all those interested in the subject and who appreciate the traditional British craftsmanship entailed It embraces all models based upon the same initial patent which were produced between the years 1924 and 1999 commencing with the original Mark 1 and progressing through twelve other models to the final Webley Tempest introduced more than half a century later In addition to the pistols themselves there are sections of the book relating to pellet styles and various shooting accessories produced by the same company The whole work is divided into twentytwo sections the text being accompanied throughout with 226 original photographs and over 70 line illustrations each of which has been prepared by the author. Modern Combat Pistols provides a comprehensive account of the development of military and police semi-automatic pistols and their ammunition from 1945 to present day. It follows on from the same authors critically acclaimed Assault Rifle [Crowood 2004].The first part of the book looks at defensive and offensive pistols, the difference between military and police pistols, and special-purpose weapons such as silenced and underwater pistols. The history of the handgun before 1945 is described, and there is an examination both of the development of the semi-automatic pistol since 1945 and of future trends in pistol design. The second part of the book is divided up on a country-by-country basis. Each countrys section starts with a historical overview of pistol development in that country before giving a description and technical data for each individual weapon. Appendices cover technical aspects of semi-automatic and ammunition design. The Adjustable Spanner is the product of 30 years\' collecting and original research, fired by Ron Geesin\'s acquisition of the SLIK adjustable spanner hanging in his father\'s garage. At the core of this book is a concise history of this much-maligned tool. Serious and comical observations parallel its checkered life, from its bent beginnings in the blacksmith\'s shop to over-designed and lovingly engineered treasures by small Birmingham machinists. Discussions and findings about components and construction on the practical side, and patents, registered designs, and trademarks on the design protection side, paint a closer look at uses and abuses. Immersed in an analysis of types and styles, and diving deeply into the histories of the inventors and makers, you will be amazed at the engineering diversity required to produce these most fanciful but essential supports to the Industrial Revolution. The free and open source software movement, from its origins in hacker culture, through the development of GNU and Linux, to its commercial use today. In the 1980s, there was a revolution with far-reaching consequences--a revolution to restore software freedom. In the early 1980s, after decades of making source code available with programs, most programmers ceased sharing code freely. A band of revolutionaries, self-described hackers, challenged this new norm by building operating systems with source code that could be freely shared. In For Fun and Profit, Christopher Tozzi offers an account of the free and open source software (FOSS) revolution, from its origins as an obscure, marginal effort by a small group of programmers to the widespread commercial use of open source software today. Tozzi explains FOSS\'s historical trajectory, shaped by eccentric personalities--including Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds--and driven both by ideology and pragmatism, by fun and profit.Tozzi examines hacker culture and its influence on the Unix operating system, the reaction to Unix\'s commercialization, and the history of early Linux development. He describes the commercial boom that followed, when companies invested billions of dollars in products using FOSS operating systems the subsequent tensions within the FOSS movement and the battles with closed source software companies (especially Microsoft) that saw FOSS as a threat. Finally, Tozzi describes FOSS\'s current dominance in embedded computing, mobile devices, and the cloud, as well as its cultural and intellectual influence. Originally published between 1920-70, The History of Civilization was a landmark in early twentieth century publishing. It was published at a formative time within the social sciences, and during a period of decisive historical discovery. The aim of the general editor, C.K. Ogden, was to summarize the most up to date findings and theories of historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and sociologists.
