This book describes the many astronomical and humanscale issues that make interstellar travel a formidable challenge even with the right technology for making the actual trip Since the 1920s science fiction authors have invented dozens of ways to make interstellar travel a reality Sadly after nearly 100 years of effort scientists and engineers have yet to invent a single inexpensive technology to get us to the stars What is more disturbing about this challenge is that the actual technology to make the trip is mostly irrelevant Some of the issues are already known and being addressed such as What will be our destination How many travelers should go What will happen to human health along the way But the Big Picture of interstellar travel goes well beyond the design of the engines that power our starships Once we arrive at our destination what will we do Will our immune systems be so compromised from the travel that we can never actually visit the surface of a biologicallyactive planet What will we breath Will we be forced to live under a dome and never venture outside without a spacesuit What kind of a reward will that be for a decades or centurieslong voyage What will communication with Earth be like with time delays of 100 years These and many other questions will be covered as astronomer Sten Odenwald explores the other issues and challenges of interstellar travel that arise from living in an unfortunately very limited physical world He will also explore optimistic scenarios involving artificial intelligence and hibernation that could completely change the game in making interstellar travel a reality. The Starflight Handbook A Pioneer\'s Guide to Interstellar TravelThe Starflight Handbook is an indispensable compendium of the manyand varied methods for traversing the vast interstellar gulf--don\'tleave the Solar System without it! --Robert Forward Verysensible, very complete and useful. Its good use of references andtechnical \'sidebars\' adds to the book and allows the nontechnicaltext to be used by ordinary readers in an easy fashion. I certainlywould recommend this book to anyone doing any thinking at all aboutinterstellar flight or the notion of possibilities of contactsbetween hypothetical civilizations in different stat systems.--Louis Friedman Executive Director, The Planetary Society TheStarflight Handbook is the first and only compendium on planetEarth of the radical new technologies now on the drawing boards ofsome of our smartest and most imaginative space scientists andengineers. Scientists and engineers as well as general readers willbe captivated by its: * In-depth discussions of everything from nuclear pulse propulsionengines to in-flight navigation, in flowing, non-technicallanguage * Sidebars and appendices cover technical and mathematical conceptsin detail * Seventy-five elegant and enlightening illustrations depictingstarships and their hardware Author: Wernher Von Braun, Frederick I., III Ordway, Fred DuPublisher: HarpercollinsKeywords: space, history, travel, update, rocketryPages: 308Published: 1985-11Language: EnglishCategory: Aeronautics & Astronautics, Astronomy & Space Science, Science & Math, ISBN-10: 0061818984 ISBN-13: 9780061818981Binding: Hardcover (4 Sub) The travel industry is thriving, and with the increasing demand for personalized travel experiences, there’s In the dynamic landscape of the travel industry, the digital realm has become the gateway for
