[EBOOK]-Surveying in Early America: The Point of Beginning, An Illustrated History: Transcript

George Washington our first president began his professional life as a lead surveyor and remained devoted to the importance that landed property had in creating personal wealth for individuals and government stability for a developing nation  Whether determining a colonial border setting a boundary for a tract of land accurately recording a sale or making a map the colonists relationship to the land was determined and recorded  Washington promoted the idea that an accurate recording land ownership borders and boundaries was an integral part of Americans future economic stability   At the age of 16 Washington headed west with a surveying company owned by Lord William Fairfax Lord Fairfax noted the strengths that Washington possessed and took an interest in his career This relationship would shape the young Washington into the leader he would become A year later Washington formed his own surveying company and made several trips westward towards the Ohio River Valley His knowledge of the western territories convinced the British government in Virginia to commission him into the Army in 1753 even though he had no real military experience  Surveying the Ohio Country George Washington and the Practice and Politics of Western Expansion awardwinning photographer Dan Patterson and American historian Clinton Terry vividly and accurately document and retrace the steps surveyors took to map the Ohio River Valley  Patterson and Terry thoroughly create detailed and historically accurate narratives paired with exquisite and vivid photographs of these little known expeditions of our founding father  Working with Colonial reenactors at sites in Ohio Pennsylvania and Virginia from Fort Normal to Colonial Williamsburg Patterson recreates the effort of Washington and his team of surveyors to map the American wilderness and occasionally lay personal claim land to great expanses of land along the way Through the lens of Patterson camera readers will see what Washington saw as he worked to learn his trade and then lead expeditions into the American interior using instruments and methods employed 260 years ago   Terry describes Washingtons journey providing extensively researched historical facts to the visually rich images photographed by award winning American photographer Dan Patterson Together the authors document a stunning and authentic recreation of the early days of our first commander in chief and the mapping of the Ohio Country   From the practice of land and survey measurement and development of Gunters Chain a measuring chain based on the dimensions of an acre to the practices employed in property documentation the authors illustrate and narrate the power and politics of the surveyors job  Several chapters are dedicated to detailing the techniques used for individual instruments and the responsibilities of each member of a full colonial surveying team methods that did not substantially change until the invention of GPS technology  . How did they meet their basic needs for survival?. What kinds of developments did they make?. How did they express themselves?. How do we know the answers to these questions?. Sometimes it will be observed that many obstructions like rivers, canals, ponds. thick jungles, ditches, buildings, etc. lie on the chain line. These obstacles can be avoided in chaining operation by applying some fundamental geometric rules. . Surveying is related with the determination of relative location of points on or near the surface of earth. It is the art of. GEMINI was the intermediate manned space flight program between America\'s first steps into space with Mercury and the amazing and unprecedented accomplishments achieved during the manned lunar expeditions of Apollo. Because of its position between these two other efforts, Gemini is probably less remembered. Still, it more than had its place in man\'s progress into this new frontier. Gemini accomplishments were manyfold. They included many firsts: first astronaut-controlled maneuvering in space first rendezvous in space of one spacecraft with another first docking of one spacecraft with a propulsive stage and use of that stage to transfer man to high altitude first traverse of man into the Earth\'s radiation belts first extended manned flights of a week or more in duration first extended stays of man outside his spacecraft first controlled reentry and precision landing and many more. These achievements were significant in ways one cannot truly evaluate even today, but two things stand out: (1) it was the time when America caught up and surpassed the Soviet Union in manned space flight, and (2) these demonstrations of capability were an absolute prerequisite to the phenomenal Apollo accomplishments then yet to come. PROJECT Gemini is now little remembered, having vanished into that special limbo reserved for the successful intermediate steps in a fast-moving technological advance. Conceived and approved in 1961, the second major project in the American manned space flight program carried men into orbit in 1965 and 1966. Gemini thus kept Americans in space between the path-breaking but limited Earth-orbital missions of Project Mercury and the far more ambitious Project Apollo, which climaxed in 1969 when two men first set foot on the Moon. This book is a detailed history of the failures and victories of the Gemini program. This version of the book includes an overview of Project Gemini and a number of photos from NASA’s project files. 596 pages, color illustrations and photos. In this new, fully updated edition, expert author Francis Crosby traces the development of fighters from World War I to the present day, and highlights actions in which fighters played a crucial role. The A-Z sections form an illustrated guide to over 170 fighter aircraft. The first covers aircraft from the pioneering days of air fighting in World War I through to the early jets at the end of World War II, and the second focuses on the remarkable advances of post-World War II, mainly jet, aircraft from 1945 to the present day. Specification boxes for each aircraft provide information about the plane\'s country of origin, first flight, power, armament, size, weight and performance. Also included is a glossary explaining aviation terms. Illustrated with 600 photographs, this is a key reference book for all aircraft enthusiasts. Aircraft designed to attack and destroy other aircraft have existed almost as long as military aviation. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, aircraft designed specifically as fighters appeared. This book of fighter aircraft traces the development of fighters from World War I to the present day, and highlights actions in which fighters played a crucial role. The first section covers aircraft from the pioneering days of air fighting in World War I through to the early jets in action at the end of World War II. This section is brimming with information and often rare photographs of truly classic fighter aircraft including the Bristol Fighter, Spit re and P-51 Mustang. The second section of the book focuses on the remarkable advances of post-World War II, mainly jet aircraft from 1945 to the present day, and includes the MiG-15, Hunter, Harrier and F-15 Eagle. Detailed specification boxes are featured for every aircraft listed. These contain up-to-date information, including country of origin, first flight, power, armament, size, weights and performance. This splendidly illustrated book, with many previously unpublished pictures from the Imperial War Museum Photograph Archive, is a must-have reference book for everyone interested in the aircraft that have helped make history. The Cambridge Illustrated History of Astronomy traces the history of astronomy as a science, describing in detail the various discoveries that have led to our current beliefs about space and the universe. It shows how speculations based on sky-gazing have formed part of the essential mythology of societies from the earliest times reveals astronomy to be an exacting and serious science evolving in tandem with geometry and mathematics and describes the contributions made by great thinkers such as Pythagoras, Galileo, Descartes, and Newton. From the moon’s formation, to its potential for future exploration, this richly illustrated volume presents 100 milestones in lunar history.   With dazzling images on every spread, and illuminating text by astrobiologist Dr. David Warmflash, Moon: An Illustrated History chronologically presents 100 milestones in the Moon’s development and exploration. Starting 4.5 billion years ago when the Moon formed, this stunning volume moves from the hypotheses of the Moon’s formation (4.5 billion years ago) to sixth-century BCE predictions of solar eclipses, from the twentieth-century Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union to private space companies and possible future lunar colonies. Find out about lunar calendar systems and cults in the Bible how lunar brightness was used to estimate stellar distances how advancing telescopes in the seventeenth century allowed us to eye the Moon more closely how author Jules Verne inspired the Father of Astronautics the originals of the Saturn V Moon Rocket the Apollo missions, and so much more. Originally designed in 1952 as an anti-submarine warfare platform for the U.S. Navy, almost two-thousand Sikorsky H-34s have served on every continent with the armed forces of twenty-five countries - from combat in Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and throughout southeast Asia, to saving flood victims, recovering astronauts, fighting fires, and carrying presidents, military H-34s have met every challenge handed them. With continuing post-military service, the number of countries which the H-34 has called home has swelled to nearly fifty. Revitalized with turbine engines, it has yet to fade from sight. Whether lifting construction material or supporting police departments, the DC-3 of helicopters will still be flying on its fiftieth anniversary. The most detailed account of the H-34 to appear, Lennart Lundh\'s Sikorsky H-34 reflects over a decade of research. It takes the reader through the H-34 from nose to tail, and across its service from Argentina to Vietnam. Few of the photographs have been published before, and many are drawn from private collections. A special feature is the chapter of impressions and anecdotes from fourteen H-34 crew members.
