Scorpions on the rise in Southern Utah Scorpion calls have been on the rise the last few years especially in the areas around Stone Cliff and Little Valley. People who have been used to one or two a year are now seeing 5+ a month. What is the reason? Most of the calls are for the Arizona Bark S corpion which has a very painful sting. They are not native to St George but are thought to have been brought in with the palm trees. As sommunites become more and more established and as there is more water and vegetation for scorpions to hide in they wil l spread further and become more common. There are some things you can do that will make a big difference. 1. Trim you plants and bushes and clean up debris under them. This will give them less harborage area. 2. Make sure you have good weather stripping aroun d doors and windows. This will make it harder for them to get into the house. 3. Seal any entry points into the home. Especially around piping and electrical lines. This is a very easy thing to do and will also help with mice and other pest. 4. Go out at night with a black light and see if you missed any spots. Hunting Scorpions with a black light can be a lot of fun. They will glow when shown under a black light and you can see any spots that have high activity. Many people jump right to insect sprays and don ’t get the results they want. Scorpions have a very thick exoskeleton, this will require them to pick up more insecticide before they die. If you are using an over the counter product, you will not have much success. There are some very good products (None of them come premixed) and if combined with the preventions steps mentioned earlier you can get great results.
