(READ)-Fundamentals of Astrodynamics: Second Edition (Dover Books on Physics): Transcript
Developed at the U S Air Force Academy and a bestseller since its original 1971 Dover publication this teaching text has been widely known and used throughout the astrodynamics and aerospace engineering communities Completely revised and updated this second edition takes into account new developments of the past four decades especially regarding information technology. This Microcosm Press 2007 Author of the Year award winner has graced us once again with the standard astrodynamics reference for those in the business of spaceflight. What sets this book apart is that nearly all of the theoretical mathematics is followed by discussions of practical applications implemented in tested software routines available to readers at no cost. For example, the book includes a compendium of algorithms that allow students and professionals to determine orbits with high precision. Without a doubt, when an astrodynamics problem arises, it will continue to be standard practice for engineers to keep this volume close at hand and look it up in Vallado. While the first and second editions were exceptionall useful and popular throughout the community, there are a number of reasons why the third edition will be even more so. Teaching text developed by U.S. Air Force Academy and designed as a first course emphasizes the universal variable formulation. Develops the basic two-body and n-body equations of motion orbit determination classical orbital elements, coordinate transformations differential correction more. Includes specialized applications to lunar and interplanetary flight, example problems, exercises. 1971 edition. This special edition of Apollo Expeditions to the Moon, an official NASA publication, commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the July 20, 1969, Moon landing with a thrilling insider\'s view of the space program. Essays by participants — engineers, astronauts, and administrators — recall the program\'s unprecedented challenges. Written in direct, jargon-free language, this compelling adventure features more than 160 dazzling color photographs and scores of black-and-white illustrations. Insights into management challenges as well as its engineering feats include contributions from Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Alan Shepard, and other astronauts NASA administrator James E. Webb Christopher C. Kraft, head of the Mission Control Center and engineer Wernher von Braun. Their informative, exciting narratives explore the issues that set the United States on the path to the Moon, offer perspectives on the program\'s legacy, and examine the particulars of individual missions. Journalist Robert Sherrod chronicles the selection and training of astronauts. James Lovell, commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13, recounts the damaged ship\'s dramatic return to Earth. Geologist and Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt discusses the lunar expeditions\' rich harvest of scientific information. These and other captivating firsthand accounts form an ideal introduction to the historic U.S. space program as well as fascinating reading for all ages. This new expanded edition includes a chronology of the Apollo project, additional photographs, and a new Foreword by historian Paul Dickson that offers a modern retrospective of the Moon landing, discussing its place in the world of space exploration and its impact on American history and culture. A comprehensive introduction to aeronautics for both majors and non-majors, covering the basics of fluid mechanics (for aeronautics), the production of lift and drag, and the effects of viscosity and compressibility, among other topics. Frequently introduces applied aerodynamic methods and explains design integration in many chapters. Provides thorough coverage of the theory of circulation. For a sophomore/junior/senior course in aeronautics. (vs. Anderson) Beginning with Hamiltonian dynamics, Modern Astrodynamics blends the modern methods of dynamical systems theory with the perturbation theory methods of the last century. With an emphasis on earth satellite motion, the derivation of the geopotential expansion is covered, and the motion of an object under the influence of the Earth\'s equatorial oblateness is derived to the first order. The structure of the phase space of Hamiltonian systems is explored both with modern numerical techniques (the surface of section) periodic orbit theory, and nonlinear resonance methods. The text concludes with applications of these modern methods to the problem of the relative motion of satellites in orbit about the earth, and the application of KAM tori to earth satellite motion. The text is suitable for a semester course at the introductory graduate level. Topics covered include: (1) Modern Numerical Methods, (2) Transformation Theory, (3) Variation of Elements, (4) Perturbing Forces, (5) General Perturbations, (6) Nonlinear Resonance, (7) Relative Satellite Motion, and (8) KAM Tori. From the age of Galileo until the early years of the 20th century, scientists grappled with seemingly insurmountable paradoxes inherent in the theories of classical physics. With the publication of Albert Einstein\'s special and general theories of relativity, however, traditional approaches to solving the riddles of space and time crumbled. In their place stood a radically new view of the physical world, providing answers to many of the unsolved mysteries of pre-Einsteinian physics.Acclaimed as the pinnacle of scientific philosophy, the theories of relativity tend to be regarded as the exclusive domain of highly trained scientific minds. The great physicist himself disclaimed this exclusionary view, and in this book, he explains both theories in their simplest and most intelligible form for the layman not versed in the mathematical foundations of theoretical physics. In addition to the theories themselves, this book contains a final part presenting fascinating considerations on the universe as a whole. Appendices cover the simple derivation of the Lorentz transformation, Minkowski\'s four-dimensional space, and the experimental confirmation of the general theory of relativity. Students, teachers, and other scientifically minded readers will appreciate this inexpensive and accessible interpretation of one of the world\'s greatest intellectual accomplishments. Radiation hydrodynamics is a broad subject that cuts across many disciplines in physics and astronomy: fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, and radiative transfer, among others. The theory developed in this book by two specialists in the field can be applied to the study of such diverse astrophysical phenomena as stellar winds, supernova explosions, and the initial phases of cosmic expansion, as well as the physics of laser fusion and reentry vehicles. As such, it provides students with the basic tools for research on radiating flows.Largely self-contained, the volume is divided into three parts: Chapters 1 to 5 focus on the dynamics of nonradiating fluids and then consider applications of a few astrophysically interesting problems concerning waves, shocks, and stellar winds. The second part of the book — Chapters 5 to 8 — deals with the physics of radiation, radiation transport, and the dynamics of radiating fluids, emphasizing the close relationship of radiation hydrodynamics to ordinary fluid dynamics. Part 3 comprises a short appendix on tensor calculus, explaining the use of tensor concepts in writing equations that allow a simple transition from ordinary fluids to relativistic fluids to radiation.Combining relevant material scattered widely among a large number of books, journal papers, and technical reports, this volume will be of immense value to students and researchers in many fields. 1984 edition.
