Slide2A man named Guy Montag was a fireman in the 24
th century.
Slide3His job, as a fireman, was to burn books.
Slide4One day after Montag got off work, he met a young 17 year old, Clarisse McClellan, his new neighbor.
Slide5Clarisse tells Montag that his job is different now than what it used to be. Firemen used to put out fires instead of making them.
Slide6Clarisse’s family talks to one another and they walk places too. Montag finds this strange.
Slide7Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy with his life. She leaves him without waiting for an answer.
Slide8Montag was left standing in the street, not sure of his answer, but fearing Clarisse knew the answer.
Slide9Montag enters his house thinking about whether he is happy with his life. He decides he’s not happy.
Slide10He goes to his bedroom where he finds Mildred, his wife, with ear plugs in her ears, listening to the radio.
Slide11Montag accidentally kicks an empty bottle of sleeping pills on the ground.
Slide12He calls the hospital to come over to the house because his wife swallowed all of the sleeping pills in the bottle.
Slide13Two men from the hospital come to pump the pills from Mildred’s stomach.
Slide14Montag goes to bed after this long day.
Slide15Mildred, the next morning, tries to tell Montag about the “family” on the television that makes up 3 of 4 walls in their parlor.
Slide16Montag leaves the house to travel to work.
Slide17On his way he runs into Clarisse who is walking outside in the rain.
Slide18Clarisse asks Montag why he wanted to become a fireman because he is not like the other firemen.
Slide19Then Clarisse has to leave for a psychiatrist appointment.
Slide20At the firehouse they have a Mechanical Hound. He snatches at Montag.
Slide21Captain Beatty, of the fire department, tells Montag that the hound can only think about hunting and killing.
Slide22Captain Beatty confirms with Montag that the Mechanical Hound will be looked at to make sure it does not attack him.
Slide23Later, in the firehouse, Montag almost lets it slip that he read the first sentence of an old fairy tale.
Slide24Without thinking, Montag asks his fellow firemen about the olden days of firefighters.
Did firemen used to prevent fires instead of starting them?
Slide25The other firemen brought out their rule books to show him that this was never true. Firemen always burned books.
Slide26Then the fire alarm sounded and everyone was out the door, headed to an old woman’s home.
Slide27The woman had books hidden in her attic. The men rushed in and set the books up to be set on fire.
Slide28Montag ends up taking a book from the house, hiding it under his coat.
Slide29When the firemen go to light the match to set the books ablaze, the old woman does not leave.
Slide30She ends up striking a match herself. She not only set her books on fire, but also herself.
Slide31Montag gets home and puts the book under his pillow.
Slide32Montag realizes as he speaks to his wife, that nothing in their life is interesting or exciting.
Slide33Mildred tells Montag that she thinks Clarisse was killed when she was struck by car and that’s why Montag hasn’t seen her.
Slide34The next day, Montag decides he wants to take some time off of the fire department.
Slide35Montag feels guilty about burning the books and even more guilty about killing the old woman. Mildred does not understand and so they begin to argue.
Slide36Then Captain Beatty comes to Montag’s home.
Slide37Captain Beatty explains to Montag that this is a stage every fireman goes through. He decides to give a confusing outline of the history of books and firemen.
Slide38Mildred decides to straighten up the room. While doing this, she spots the book behind Montag’s pillow.
Slide39Montag screams at her to sit down, and Beatty is not phased.
Slide40Beatty actually comes out and tells Montag that firemen were originally for preventing fires.
Slide41Montag asks what would happen if a fireman took a book home.
Slide42Beatty tells Montag that they would give this fireman 48 hours until the firemen would come burn the book if he hadn’t already.
Slide43Captain Beatty leaves and Montag reveals some 20 books to Mildred who then gets really afraid.
Slide44Another person comes to their door, but they do not answer. They begin reading books.
Slide45While Montag and Mildred are reading, the Mechanical Hound comes to their home and sniffs around.
Slide46Montag contacts an old professor named Faber. Faber is afraid Montag is trying to trick him into talking about books.
Slide47Montag travels to Faber’s house in an attempt to make a copy of the book he took from the old woman’s home.
Slide48Montag gets mad at the radio on the subway and displays to the people on the subway that he had a book; but he runs before anyone could get him.
Slide49Montag gets to Faber’s house where he shows Faber the book.
Slide50Faber tries to explain to Montag the meaning behind books. Faber agrees to help Montag with Captain Beatty.
Slide51They are going to make a copy of the book. Faber gives Montag a 2-way radio to stick in his ear for his talk with Beatty.
Slide52Montag goes to the firehouse to turn the book in to Captain Beatty who tosses it in the trash right away and welcomes him back.
Slide53Captain Beatty tries to convince Montag that books are bad.
Slide54Then the fire alarm goes off and when they get to their destination, it’s Montag’s house.
Slide55Mildred runs out of the house and is picked up by a taxi.
Slide56Montag is ordered to burn his own house down. After he does this, Beatty arrests Montag.
Slide57Montag is frustrated with Beatty and so throws a flamethrower at him and runs.
Slide58The Mechanical Hound catches Montag’s leg, but Montag manages to destroy the hound too.
Slide59Collecting the remaining 4 books, Montag sets out on foot, running.
Slide60There are alerts all over the place. Everyone is looking for him.
Slide61Montag makes it to Faber’s house. Faber tells him to follow the railroad tracks to find others like himself.
Slide62The news told them that a new Mechanical Hound and helicopter were sent out looking for Montag.
Slide63Faber decides to leave too, to head to St. Louis.
Slide64Montag continues to run, catching updates about the search for himself on his ear bud radio.
Slide65Montag jumps into a river and floats until he can’t see the search lights any longer.
Slide66He finds the railroad tracks and begins to walk.
Slide67Montag meets 5 men around a fire. Granger, one of the men, gives Montag a drink that will prevent the Mechanical Hound from finding him.
Slide68They observe on TV that the Mechanical Hound catches someone else, who they know is not Montag. The news tells the public that it is Montag. So now Montag is free.
Slide69Granger explains to Montag that there are a large group of people who have classic books stored in their memory, and they are one of those groups.
Slide70The men look up and see a bomb flash over the city. They decide to go back and help to rebuild the city.
