“Soulless in the night”

This stanza has a deep meaning to it which is the most important stanza that shows mood in this poem. Slide3

Theme

Scary

Chilling

The theme of this poem is scary because many words in the poem and stanzas all relate to ancestry, and how it will affect you in your life whether it is good or badSlide4

Imagery

“Fragrance through window and door”

“Wafts through the woods, the sea.”

You can smell the Fragrance almost like a perfume kind of smell traveling through the windows and doors.

You may be able to feel the smooth calm air through the sea and the woods. The air will be cool and smooth skimming the water and bristling through the woods. Slide5

Sound Devices

“Chafing at custom’s”

“Sedge and Stream”

Both of these stanzas are alliterations.

In the poem they help bring together that eerie mood of the poem by repeating letters. Slide6

Figurative Language

“Chafing at custom’s chain”

This stanza is an example of a alliteration. It helps brings together the grim feeling by repeating the first letter c.
