COMMA RULE #1: Compound Sentences

Use commas in compound sentences to separate

independent clauses

* when they are joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because).

Example: Napoleon wanted to eat the tater tots but food wasn’t allowed in class.

*Contain subject and predicate; can stand alone as its own sentence.

COMMA RULE #2:Introductory Clauses/Phrases

Use a comma after introductory

clauses or phrases*.

Example: After performing some awesome dog tricks Coconut smiled as he waited to get a delicious treat.

*“Set the stage” for the main part of the sentence; usually start with “after, although, because, before, if, since, though, until, when, etc…

Comma Rule #3: Non-Essential Phrases/Clauses

Use a pair of commas to separate phrases or clauses that are not essential to the meaning of a sentence.

Rule #4: Items in a Series

Use commas to separate items in a series/list.

Example:

My perfect weekend includes pizza Netflix sweatpants and puppy snuggles.

Comma Rule #5: Direct Address

Use a comma when a person is directly addressed in a sentence.

This can be shown by using a person’s name:

Napoleon go get me a pizza.

Or without using a specific name and starting with “yes” or “no”:

Yes you do smell like cheese today.

Comma Rule #6: Dialogue/Quotations

Use commas when writing direct quotations and dialogue.

“I love to write essays ” said every one of Ms.

Use commas when writing out full addresses and dates (duh

Comma Rule 8: Coordinating Adjectives

We use a comma between two or more adjectives if:

The order of the words can be reversed, and the sentence makes sense.

The word “and” can be put between the words, and the sentence makes sense.

If the sentence does not make sense after these changes, no comma is necessary. Slide17
