National Hurricane CenterReleases National Mapof Storm SurgeRisk along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts can now evaluate their own unique risk to storm surge. Beginning November 6NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Office for Coastal Here are example utilizes the hydrodynamic Sea, Lake, and Overland Surges from Hurricanes (SLOSH) model to simulate storm surge in 27 basins along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts “You don’t have to think very hard about it, just look at your location on the national map to find if you are in an area at risk for storm surge from a future tropical storm or hurricane”, said Brian Zachry, Ph.D., NHC storm surge specialist. What should individuals do if they discover that they live in an area vulnerable to storm surge? “You should find out today if you live in a hurricane storm surge evacuation zone as determined by your local emergency management agency”, said Dr. Rick Knabb, Director of the National Hurricane Center. “If you do live in an evacuation zone, decide today where you will go and how you will get there, if and when you’re instructed by emergency managers to evacuate.” The site is linked at: http://noaa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/StorytellingTextLegend/index.html?appid=b1a20ab5eec1490 58bafc059635a82ee Additional information:-Storm Surge Can Be Deadly - 10 Tips to Be Ready – English: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/StormSurgeCanBeDeadly10tips-single.pdf Spanish: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/StormSurgeCanBeDeadly10tips-single-spanish.pdf -NHC Storm Surge website: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge Contact: NHC Public Affairs: nhc.public.affairs@noaa.gov November 6, 2014
