What do Previous students Think?

Theory FeedbackSlide2

Theory / SLA

Generally, students view Theory as one of the most difficult courses…

There is a lot of reading

(at the beginning)

There is a lot of writing

But….Slide3

Students tend to like theory!

They like it because:

There is a lot of support from the teacher

It is well organized

Difficult concepts are explained with clear, helpful examples

You get a lot of 1-on-1 attention from your teacher

You will get a lot of feedback from your teacher

There is a lot of support from the students

There is group work, but grades are individual

Big, heavy readings are split up and the work is shared.Slide4

What are Some things students like about this course?

“The Theory class is well-organized and I really like the way the professor explains ideas & concepts. He perfectly prepares whole lessons, and feedbacks are logical:

“His demonstration was clear and his feedback was sharp and accurate”

“T helps the student’s understanding very well”

“I couldn’t understand each topic of the class as his teaching method was not clear and sometimes not appropriate”

“At the beginning of this course we found it this subject could be tough in its contents itself… but now we loved it and enjoyed this subject a lot!! Jake

tought

us difficult concepts not too difficultly and understandably. I liked that!”

“He is very cooperative. Whenever I ask something for him, he tried to help me directly.

“I got very helpful feedback from the professor”

“Jacob offered constructive feedback and opportunity to use the knowledge we have learnt. Having students do the ‘TBL, TPR’ lesson by themselves was great. It helped a lot to understand how to use the theory when I teach children.”Slide5

However…

Some students still have some ‘complaints’

They wish for predictable things:

Less homework

Easier reading

Less academic / theoretical topics

None

of which will ever change

!

We need to keep YL competitive and rigorous! If it was too easy, you’d learn less! Some wish for more instructions and explanations …but never ask! Slide7

What are Some things You Think could be Improved?

“nothing”

“maybe it will need easier book”

less homework”

“group work”

“I am satisfied with all things”

“it was great even though I struggled with some assignments”

“I learned useful activities, but it was

too academic and too detail for use it in real”“give instructions more clearly, sometimes it’s too vague “There were a lot of ’probably’ and ‘maybe’s” “more communication”Slide8

So… what’s the lesson?

This class is hard but helpful.

Your instructor has planned it carefully and will explain everything clearly.

You will get clear feedback.

IF you don’t feel that way…

ASK FOR HELP!!!

Use the website

Come to office hours

Ask your peers

No one is happy when you’re confused… But there are easy ways to fix that!
