My Top 10 Greatest Animated Short films

Introduction

Good things can come in small packages and these short films are of no exception. Less than 45 minutes in length, the average length of a feature, a storyteller must squeeze in as much detail as possible in a short amount of time. Animated shorts also give filmmakers the opportunity to experiment with technique and style. Many innovations in film technique received their start with animated short films. Whether artistic, dramatic, comedic, or informative, animated short films have the ability to gain your attention.

Let’s count down the Top 10 Greatest Animated Short Films of All Time…Slide3

#10 Fresh Guacamole

(2012)

PES began working with stop-motion techniques by creating commercials for television. Perhaps you may remember a athlete using another person as a skateboard. It was only a matter of time before PES branched out into short films. Using everyday objects as the ingredients to make fresh guacamole, its amazing to watch a baseball get chopped into little dies just like a onion.Slide4

#9 The Commando

(1943)

What else could audiences want to see during WW II. Our lovable mischief-maker Daffy Duck goes up against the Nazis. Unlike other propaganda films during this time, this short spared no expense. And spared no one. Even Hitler gets a whack on the head with a mallet. Slide5

#8 Presto

(2008)

How does the magician get the rabbit out of his hat?

A simple premise with a lot of hilarity. Wanting to be fed before the show, the rabbit does not spare his master any form of humiliation to get his carrot. Just watching this pair battle it out through the magician’s hat is such an original idea.Slide6

#7

The Cat Came Back

(1988)

If you thought ‘The Duck Song’ was catching, just wait until you hear the tune that accompanies this short. Old Mr. Johnson had a problem when someone left a cat on his door. Once he discovers how destructive the cat is, he goes through such lengths to get rid of the cat. No matter how hard he tried, the cat always came back home to tear his house to shreds. Mr. Johnson was left with no choice but to use dynamite in the end.Slide7

#6 Runaway Brain

(1995)

Have you ever thought Mickey Mouse could find himself involved with a horror plot. Forced to take a job to send his girlfriend Minnie to Hawaii, Mickey finds his brain switched with a giant monster. The body of our beloved Mickey gets stuck with a monster’s. Action ensues as Mickey from save Minnie from a monster’s amorous advances.Slide8

#5 The Snowman

(1982)

Before the ballroom scene in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, there was the ‘Walking in the Air’ from The Snowman. Completely drawn by hand, the animators gave audiences a sense of actually flying from England to the North Pole. A lovely soundtrack accompanies. This short has inspired many, including one to write a stage play of this story. A little known holiday treat that should be seen by everyone.Slide9

#4 The Wrong Trousers

(1993)

Aardman

Animations got it’s success from the adventures of Wallace and Gromit. In The Wrong Trousers, our pair is got in the midst of a diamond heist being perpetrated by a penguin. This was the first short to win the Oscar for Best Animated Short. A hilarious chase ensues through the house involving a toy train set. It was the catalyst for many more wonderful productions from

Aardman

Studios. Slide10

#3 Adam and Dog

(2011)

Adam and Dog came out during a time when hand-drawn animation is not receiving the respect it still deserves. Not an adaptation for the Book of Genesis. Instead, this is a story focused on the origins of man’s relationship to dog. I dare you not to shed a tear at the end of this story.Slide11

#2 Paperman

(2012)

A new technique had been developed that made CGI look like hand-drawn animation. A man and a woman meet on a train platform. Man happens to see woman in building across the street. In desperation, he tries to get her attention by making paper airplanes. The airplanes gather and reunite man and woman. Featuring a stunning soundtrack and a wonderful story,

Paperman

focuses on the power of first love.Slide12

Honorable Mentions

The Dam Keeper

(2014)

Duet

(2014)Slide13

Honorable mentions

Fast Film

(2003)

Peter and the Wolf

(2008)Slide14

Honorable Mentions

Three Orphan Kittens

(1935)

What’s Opera, Doc?

(1957)Slide15

#1 The Cat Concerto

(1947)

This list could not be complete without at least one short featuring the dynamic duo of Tom and Jerry. Originally named Jasper and

Jynx

, this cat and mouse took America by storm, gained a cult following, and won many Oscars along the way. In this short, our duo is fighting over the production of ‘The Hungarian Rhapsody’. A perfect synchronization of the action and the music pursues. You’ll find yourself rolling over with laughter at the antics of this cat and mouse.
