PART 2 The Eucharist –We are the history we celebrate…

Can you identify any well known “memorials” (statues or models erected in memory of…) in and around Glasgow? Try and name 2:Cenotaph (George Square) Duke of Wellington Statue (with cone)Slide2

“Do this in memory of me…”This was one of the last instructions that Jesus gave to his disciples before his crucifixion, death and resurrection. The disciples were charged with CONTINUING the mission that Jesus had begun… they could not let what Jesus did fade away and be forgotten.

Name 3 “events/feasts/things” we mark as “remembrance” in our Society:D-Day / Remembrance Sunday / Hillsborough Disaster / November 5thQueen Street tragedy / Clutha Bar / November Lists in Church Remembering keeps history ALIVE

. When we forget, we abandon the connection with those whose efforts, struggle and sacrifice shaped our possibilities. “there but for the grace of God go I…”It could so easily have been me in the Clutha Bar, or on Queen Street that fateful day…. We have so much to the THANKFUL for…Slide3

Sometimes we remember with a period of silence….sometimes a Ceilidh…

But the important thing is that – as believers -

with our roots, our history.  “I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me …”

(Jn 15: 5)

“At the Last Supper, Our Saviour instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood, by which the Sacrifice of his Cross is perpetuated until he comes again; and till then he entrusts the memorial of his Death and Resurrection to his beloved spouse, the Church.

” (GIRM 2)

Remembering

” highlights

the lasting effect

events

have on

society.

IB

We maintain the connectionSlide4

So, if remembering = lasting effect of memorials,

the Eucharist (whose lasting effect = permanent presence of Christ in the consecrated bread and wine) also has a LIVING effect on believers who actively celebrate Christ’s offering.

WE BECOME THE MEMORIAL WE CELEBRATE!“Do this in memory of me

” Maintains the momentum, Extends Christ’s experience “then” to NOW,

Focuses our faith and

Promotes the proclamation of the Good News. Slide5

As a minute’s silence offers us the chance to remember those who have died, and a Ceilidh presents a very fun way to remember St. Andrew…… the Eucharist is the way par excellence to celebrate how much God loves us.

“For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16)Albert E

instein is quoted as saying: “insanity is

doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Is the Eucharist not just the same thing every Sunday?Slide6

The celebration of the Eucharist is not just “the same thing” over and over again.

As a LIVING sacrifice, and in common with ALL living things, the Eucharist is not stationery. When we maintain the connection, we grow, develop and continue to mature. “Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.” (Jn

6: 58) Any interaction and contact with God will challenge, comfort, support, correct, inspire, illuminate, nourish and define us as missionary disciples. (

Check out: Acts. 9: 1 – 19 – conversion of Saul)Slide7

As missionary disciples, how might our participation in the Eucharist:Challenge us: __Especially the readings can show us how we live is against God.

Comfort us: ___In times of hurt, we realise we are not alone. Support us: ___In times of hardship the community listens and welcomes us.Inspire us: ___The lives of saints and apostles motivate us to imitate them.Correct us: ___God’s will is very often NOT my will…”Thy will be done

…”Illuminate us: __The readings help us understand how God’s grace is among us Nourish us: ___Our spiritual journey needs nutrition…”

This is my body…”Define us: __ “Love one another as I have loved

you…”

The Eucharist

is not just about remembering

t

he past and celebrating t

he present but

BUILDING

God’s Kingdom among us for a better future.Slide8

When we eat this

Bread, And

Drink this cup,

We proclaim your Death, O lord,

Until you come

again

.

Read the following passage: (Luke 12: 35 – 37a)

35

Be ready for whatever comes

,

dressed for action

and with

your lamps lit

,

36

like servants who are waiting for their master to come back from a wedding feast. When he comes and knocks, they will open the door for him at once.

37

How happy are those servants whose master finds them awake and ready when he returns! I tell you, he will take off his coat, have them sit down, and will wait on them.

Be careful NOT to miss the significance of the last verse… celebrating the Eucharist here on earth is but a foretaste of how those who are faithful will be celebrated (“waited on”) in the feast of heaven!Slide9

Can you identify THREE challenging situations that we face in our lives?________________________ 2. ________________________

3. _________________________What do you think “dressed for action” means? (Clue: Ephesians 6: 14 – 20)

Give three examples of having “your lamps lit”. (

Clue: Mt. 25: 31 – 46)__________________________ 2. _______________________

3. ________________________How do we show that we are “

awake and ready” for the Master’s return?

Bibles that are well worn and falling apart are usually owned and read by people who aren’t!Slide10

A quick summary:

“Remembering” is a practical and powerful way through which we recognise the efforts of those who, often through personal and selfless sacrifice, have left us meaningful and important legacies.2. The Eucharist, as a memorial, celebrates how much God loves us through the salvific gift of the sacrifice of His only son. 3. “Sacred moments” such as the Eucharist are not static or just historical events, they have a lasting and living effect on shaping who we are. 4. The Eucharist is the living celebration through which we maintain our connection with the God of our past, present and future.

5. Trusting in the promise of Christ that He will come back, we try to be faithful servants , “having our lamps lit” in order that we are ready to welcome him when He returns. 6. What is the “lasting effect” of the Eucharist?
