Provide Peace Members with the information needed to make a prayerful and well thought out decision about Peace’s future early childhood ministriesPURPOSE OF ANALYSISSlide5
1999 – Futures Committee working on plans for Childcare & Senior Care 2000 – Futures Committee presents to the Peace congregation the conceptual plans for the Lawndale Campus with a pre-school through 8
th
grade school with an estimated cost of $11M
2001 – Peace conducts a Capital Stewardship Campaign. Proceeds from the campaign and maximum borrowing limits support an $8M building2002 – Peace Voters approve a capital program for a K – 8 school at Lawndale with pre-school to be at AdamsBACKGROUNDSlide6
2003 – Lawndale School opens. Peace leadership decides that pre-school programs are also at Lawndale.2005 – Plans are drawn up to develop Peace School due to enrollment increases and to better accommodate the needs of a quality early childhood program
2006 – Congregation votes to build, but later the plan is put on hold due to Delphi bankruptcy and uncertain future for Saginaw operations
BACKGROUNDSlide7
January 2015 – Peace BOD approves the formation of a Task Force to evaluate the possibility of developing Peace School for improved early childhood (infant and toddler) programsMay 2015 – Peace Voters approve a Capital Generosity Campaign for Fall 2015
Plan is to raise enough funds to develop the facilities for early childhood programs and enhance worship services without adding long term debt
Contingency Plan, if developing early childhood programs is not deemed to be financially/ministerially viable, is for campaign funds to take care of existing facility needs and to pay down existing $4M mortgage with Michigan CEF for the purpose of future expansion
BACKGROUNDSlide8
No infant care program offeredPre-school 3’s & 4’s are in 2 rooms originally designed for 2 kindergarten classes. Lack of classrooms/personnel to offer 2/3/4 day which other programs offer.
No dedicated gross motor spaces – gym availability limited
Kindergarten classes are in rooms originally intended for primary grades creating congested conditions for the school restricting its ability to grow and attract unchurched families.
K–8 enrollment are at levels that are often less than optimal (under sized classes; split classes; inconsistent enrollment classes) – entrance point has changed to infant/toddler/early childhoodPeace School continues to be Peace’s primary ministry and offers the best opportunities to grow ministries
CURRENT SITUATIONSlide9
Overall Saginaw area population around Peace School is projected by 2020 to be around the same as today.Christian churches and schools are losing members and students throughout the U.S.
Saginaw Catholic Schools have consolidated into one elementary school.
Nouvel
enrollment has shrunk from 500+ to potentially under 200 in the near future. St. Stephen Early Childhood Program closed this year.Great Lakes area LCMS schools are losing enrollment that threatens their future viability. LEAP formed to address problem.TRENDS & DEMOGRAPHICSSlide10
Provide infant and toddler care services within the Peace Family and the surrounding community of faithful Christians or any families seeking child care Improve Peace School to develop new early childhood programs (i.e. gross motor; food/cooking prep; more childcare rooms; additional storage & offices)
Offer quality programs that provides enhanced learning & development opportunities over other area programs
Strengthen early childhood programs that will provide a better feeder system to K – 8 school
MINISTRY OBJECTIVESSlide11
Attract local parents who want or need the convenience of a single drop off point for their childrenConnect with young families to bring them closer to Christ with baptism being a key connection point
Bless Saginaw area ministries through an expanded Christian infant – 8

Operating an Early Childhood Center including infant care is feasible.Should not expect overall program to be profitableReasonable expectation that program revenues can cover operating expenses (not facility costs)
Saginaw Township market for Christian child care is not fully saturated and is a mission and outreach opportunity
Infant care is a great feeder system to the K-8 school: retention rate of 80% - 95% based on other Lutheran programs
Peace serves as an extended family to a young familyThe earlier the church and school connect to young families, the more likely to retain that family through the school years
