STOP THE BLEED

Presentation By: Christina Dewberry-Heard RN,MSN,MBA Brookhaven College Nursing Brigham Wilcoxson District Emergency Manager 2

STOP THE BLEED Stop The Bleed is a National Campaign that started after the Sandy Hook School Shooting 2012: It’s mission is to educate people on what to do to prevent a person from bleeding to death. Helping people to realize that waiting for 1 st Responders (EMT or Paramedics) to arrive maybe too late for someone bleeding out.3

STOP THE BLEED Stop The Bleed is when a tourniquet is applied in an emergency or life-threating situation to stop/control bleeding. Much like CPR training. “Stop The Bleed” training provides any person with the ability to recognize life-threating bleeding , intervene and possibly save a life. 4

STOP THE BLEED Stop The Bleed has become highly visible through pubic service announcements, TV as well as at many sports events. February 28 th 2017 Capital Hill lawmakers participated in an Bleeding Control Simulation. Presented by the leaders of the American College of Surgeons. The American Heart Association has included a “Stop The Bleed” training as part of their first aid training. 5

Take Action A person can bleed to death in 5 mins . or lessAs a 1st Provider, you must be prepared to react!!!If you see something, say something and, do something (if possible).

Take Action 7

Stop The Bleed A = Alert…… call 911B= Bleeding…….Find the bleeding injuryC= Compress Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. **BUT FIRST……………? 8

Ensure your Safety Before you offer any help, you must ensure your own safety. If you become injured, you will not be able to help the victim, instead you become a victim. Make sure the scene is safe for your to provide care.If at anytime, your safety is threatened, attempt to remove yourself (and the victim if possible) from danger and find a safe location. 9

Your Safety cont’d Protect yourself from blood-born infections by wearing gloves. If you don’t have gloves in your possession then it’s decision time? Do you want to expose yourself to possible HIV or other blood and body fluids ? ( remember HIV is a possibility if you have open lesions or sores, it’s not as threatening with intact skin).Good handwashing after contact with people, blood and body fluids is key in infection prevention !!! 10

Look for Life-Threatening Bleeding Find the source of bleeding . Open or remove clothing, to check for injuries that maybe hidden or covered up.Look around your environment, what’s available to you i.e. cloth, T-Shirt, clothes, first aid kit. 11

Identify “Life- Threating Bleeding” You will see !!! Blood that is spurting out of the wound Blood that won’t stop coming.Blood that is pooling on the ground.Major areas: Neck, extremities and Torso. Blood soaked clothing Loss of all or part of an arm or other body parts. Victim may become confused or unconscious. 12

If you Do Not have a Trauma kit Open the clothing over the bleeding wound. Wipe away any pooled blood. Pack (stuff) the wound with clean cloths like a T-shirt or what ever is available even a dirty cloth will do. Apply steady direct pressure with both hand directly on the top of the wound. This is very painful to the victim so you need to warn them of the pain and why it’s necessary. 13

Life-Threating Bleeding from arms, legs or Torso and a tourniquet is available: Wrap the tourniquet around the bleeding arm or leg about 3 inches above the bleeding site ( Do Not place the tourniquet onto a joint (go above the joint if necessary)Pull the Free end of the tourniquet to make it as tight as possible. Twist or wind the windlass until bleeding stops. Secure the windlass to keep the tourniquet tight. Note the time the tourniquet was applied. 14

Trauma kits There a several different trauma kits usually the kit is supplied with: C-A-T (combat application tourniquet ) Quick-Clot bandage and or gauze Emergency Trauma Dressing Gloves Trauma shears Black marker 15

Trauma kit cont’d 16

Compression & Control Although there are a number of methods that can be used to “Stop The Bleed”, they all have one thing in common. Compression on a bleeding blood vessel will stop the bleeding. 17

Stop The Bleed Kits Price range $40- $400 Israeli Bandages 18

Stay Calm !!! Easier said than done !!!! Reassure the person you are caring for as much as possible. if at all possible make sure someone is there to “watch your back” while you tend to your victim. Don’t attempt to move the victim until tourniquet is applied and secure. 19
