The Rumour About Jesus

Luke 7:17

“And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.”Slide2

The Context Behind This Rumour

Acts 1:1

– “The

former treatise

have I made, O Theophilus, of

all that Jesus began both to do and teach

…”

“The former treatise”

– the

Gospel of Luke

– is a record of those things that Jesus did and taught during his earthly ministry.

What Jesus

DID

and

TAUGHT

made an impression on people. –

Luke 4:14-15; 4:31-32; 4:36-37; 5:15; 5:26; etc.

The rumour about Jesus

(Luke 7:17)

was spread after people observed his miracles, reached a conclusion, and then told others what they believed about the identity of Jesus.Slide3

Two Miracles Preceding The Rumour About Jesus

Healing The Centurion’s Servant – Luke 7:1-10

Raising A Widow’s Only Son From The Dead – Luke 7:11-15Slide4

The Effect of These Two Miracles – Luke 7:16

“And

there came a fear on all

:

and

they glorified God

, saying...”Slide5

The Rumour About Jesus

Luke 7:16

– “And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying…”

“That a great prophet is risen up among us.”

And

“That God hath visited his people.”

Luke 7:17

- “And

this rumour of him

(Jesus) went throughout Judaea, and throughout the region round about.”Slide6

Jesus At A Pharisees’ House

Luke 7:36

- “And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him.”

The Pharisee was Simon

(vs. 40)

.

Others also were invited and were at the table eating

(vs.49)

.

Why did Simon invite Jesus?

Not out of generosity and kindness towards Jesus. Simon showed Jesus no common courtesy as a guest

(vs. 44-46)

.

In order to determine for himself whether the rumour about Jesus was true

(vs. 39)

.

You also must make a decision about Jesus! –

Mat 16:15; Mat 22:42; Mat 27:22Slide7

Testing The Rumour About Jesus

“That a great prophet is risen among us.

And

, That God hath visited his people.”

Is this true?

Can we be certain one way or the other?

Should we simply accept this rumour as true without consideration of evidence?

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

– 1 John 4:1

“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.”

– Pro 18:13Slide8

Testing The Rumour About Jesus By The Wrong Criteria

Luke 7:39

– “This man,

if he were a prophet, would have known

who

and

what manner of woman

this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.”

Says WHO?! Where did

the Scriptures

teach that this is a criteria for determining who is a prophet of God?

Simon, like so many people today, was ready to reject the rumour about Jesus – namely,

“a great prophet has risen among us”

– based on his own false criteria, not any criteria given by God to Israel! –

Deut 18:18-22; etc.If this first part of the rumour was false, then there is no need to consider the second part.Slide9

Jesus’ Response To Simon – Luke 7:40-47

40

And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

41

There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

42

And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

43

Simon answered and said, I suppose that

he

, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.Slide10

Jesus’ Response To Simon – Luke 7:40-47

44

And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped

them

with the hairs of her head.

45

Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46

My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven,

the same

loveth little.Slide11

Jesus Used Simon’s Criteria To Prove That The Rumour Was True!

The Rumour

: “That

a great prophet

is risen up among us.” –

Luk 7:16

Simon’s Criteria

: “This man,

if he were a prophet, would know

who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.” –

Luk 7:39

Jesus Proof

: “Wherefore I say unto thee,

Her sins, which are many

, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven,

the same loveth little.” – Luk 7:47Conclusion: A great prophet is risen indeed!Slide12

Jesus Proved That The Rumour About Him Was True

By proving to Simon

“That a great prophet is risen up among us,”

Jesus

also

proved the second part of that rumour as true

“That God hath visited his people.”

Question:

How

did Jesus prove “That God hath visited his people?”

Answer:

By

personally

doing what only God can do!Slide13

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

Luke 7:39 – “Now when

the Pharisee

which had bidden him saw

it

, he

spake

within

himself

, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman

this is

that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

Observe!!!

What Simon the Pharisee spoke was only spoken

within

himself – this was not spoken to Jesus, and not spoken to the others who were at the table eating.Slide14

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

Luke 7:39 – “…

the Pharisee

spake

within

himself…

” but, Jesus

knew

what Simon “spake within himself” as evidenced by his response to Simon – Luk 7:40-47.

When Jesus told Simon, in regard to the woman,

“Her sins…are many…”

Jesus proved to Simon that he knew…

“who and what manner of woman she is.”

what Simon “spake within himself.”Question: How did Jesus know these things?Slide15

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

When Jesus said,

“Her sins, which are many…”

he proved to Simon that he knew…

“who and what manner of woman she is.”

what Simon

“spake within himself.”

Question:

How did Jesus know these things?

The woman told him of her life of sin?

Simon told him what he said?

Other witnesses testified?

Answer:

“…because he knew all (men), And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.” – Joh 2:24-25Slide16

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

“He knew what was in man.” –

John 2:25b

He knew the words which Simon “spake within himself.” –

Luk 7:39

He knew of the woman’s sins, which were many. –

Luk 7:47

He knew Nathanael’s character

John1:47

He knew the Samaritan woman’s personal life – past and present.

John 4:16-18, 29

He knew Peter’s thoughts.

Mat 17:24-26Slide17

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

“He knew what was in man.”

– John 2:25b

“for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

1 Sam 16:7

“for thou, even thou only, knoweth the hearts of all the children of men.”

– 1 Kgs 8:39

“Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men…”

– Acts 1:29

“I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts:”

– Rev 2:23

Jesus knew by his own Divine power and knowledge what was in man. Therefore, the rumour about him was true!

“That God hath visited his

people”

in the person of

Jesus of Nazareth!Slide18

Jesus Did What Only God Can Do!

Jesus forgave the woman in the presence of Simon and the others –

Luk 7:47-48

“And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves,

Who is this that forgiveth sins also?”

Luk 7:49

Jesus forgave the paralytic –

Luk 5:20

“And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies?

Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

Luk 5:21

Exactly!

Jesus exercised his Divine prerogative to forgive sins, thereby proving that the rumour about him was true!

“That God hath visited his

people”

in the person of

Jesus of Nazareth!Slide19

God, In the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, Visited His People!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and

the Word was God

.”

John 1:1

“Wherefore,

when he cometh into the world

, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but

a body hast thou prepared me

…Then said I,

Lo, I come…to do thy will, O God.

” –

Heb 10:5-7

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” –

John 1:14Slide20

God, In the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, Hath Visited His People!

“And thou shalt call his name

Jesus

, for he shall save his people from their sins.” –

Mat 1:21

“And they shall call his name,

Emmanuel

, which being interpreted is,

God with us

.” –

Mat 1:23

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifest in the flesh

, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” –

1 Tim 3:16Slide21

It Was That Great Prophet, Jesus of Nazareth, God With Us, Who Said…

“Except ye believe that I am (he), ye shall die in your sins.”

– John 8:24

“Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”

– Luk 13:3

“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven..”

– Mat 10:32-33

“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.”

– Mar 16:16

“Be thou faithful unto death…”

– Rev 2:10

“He that rejecteth me,

and receiveth not my words,

hath one that judgeth him:

the word that I have spoken,

the same shall judge him

in the last day.”

John 12:48Slide22

What Effect Does This Have Upon You?

“A great fear came upon them all.”

What about You? –

Acts 10:34-35

“They glorified God…”

What about You? –

1 Cor 6:20

They spread this rumour about Jesus – “

That a great prophet is risen up among us.”

And

“That God hath visited his people.”

What about you? Are you actively telling others about Him? –

Acts 8:4; 2 Cor 4:13
