Aluminum oxide fabricated with traces of carbon is commercially used for the measurement of the irradiation dose of X and gamma rays. Recently, the incorporation of carbon and magnesium to control the electronic properties of this material has been proposed. A collaboration between the grant’s principal investigator and colleagues from universities in Brazil pioneered an investigation of the response of this material to ultraviolet radiation (UV). UV radiation is the fraction of solar light that causes skin tan. It is used in sterilization of medical tools and germicidal treatment of water and certain foods. A nearly proportional response to low UV irradiation doses followed by saturation was found, as illustrated in the figure.
