Slide2

Galatians 5:22-24

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

self-control

; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

(NASB)

Slide3

“Self-control” Defined

ἐγκράτεια

– “self-control (the virtue of one who

masters his desires and passions

, esp. his sensual appetites).” (Strong)

“Strong, possessed of mastery,

master of self

… continence, temperance” (Greek Lex.)

“Strong, robust…

having power over

, possessed of a thing …

mastering, controlling, curbing, restraining

” (Thayer).

Slide4

Self-control

ἐγκράτεια – Is found

6x

in the NT.

Acts 24:25 – Paul to Felix

1 Cor. 7:9 – Advice in marriage

1 Cor. 9:25 – Running the race

Gal. 5:23 – Fruit of the Spirit

2 Tim. 3:3 – “Without self-control” in last days

Titus 1:8 – Qualifications of elders

But the idea of

self-control

, mastery over the flesh, is found in many more passages than just where this specific Greek word is found.

Slide5

Self-control Is Not Impossible!

“I just can’t help myself”

(Yes you can!).

“The devil made me do it.”

(You can’t blame Satan, your wife, your children, your employer, your in-laws, etc.)

You do

NOT

need a

direct working of the HS,

but you

do

need

the Spirit (vs. 16, 18, 22, 25).

Areas of our lives where self-control is needed.

“How to” exercise self-control.

Slide6

Sexual Temptations of the Flesh

Adultery, fornication, pornography

(sexual sin accepted by the world, common place)

Galatians 5:19-21

– The Works of the Flesh (fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, licentiousness).

Colossians 3:5

– “Fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desires, covetousness…”

1 Cor. 6:9-10

– “Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals … shall inherit the kingdom of God…”

Slide7

Anger

Col. 3:8-9 – “But now you also, put them all aside:

anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth

. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.”

Eph. 4:31-32

– “Get rid of all

bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice

. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Slide8

Matthew 15:17-20

“Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from

the heart

, and those defile the man. For out of

the heart

come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

These are the things which defile the man

; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

Slide9

The Tongue

James 3:5

– “So also

the tongue

is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!”

Ex. 20:7

– “

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain

.”

Col. 3:8-9

– “But now you also, put them all aside …

slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another

, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.”

Slide10

How To Exercise Self-control

Study and meditation on God’s Word

Psa. 119:105

– “Thy

word

is a lamp…”

2 Tim. 2:15

– “Give

diligence

…”

Rom. 10:17

– “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the

word of Christ

.”

Heb. 4:12

– “For the

word of God

is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

See Psalm 1

Slide11

2. Pray without ceasing

Ephesians 6:10-18 – “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the

word of God

, with all

prayer and supplication

praying at all seasons

in the Spirit.”

1 Thess. 5:17 – “

Pray

without ceasing”

James 5:16-18 – “

The

effective prayer

of a righteous man can

accomplish much

.”

Slide12

3. Look for the Way of Escape

1 Cor. 10:12-13 – “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

13

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will

provide the way of escape

also, so that you will be able to endure it.

Slide13

The Way of Escape May Involve…

Taking

“radical”

steps

(Matt. 5:27-30)

Getting a new job.

Getting transferred to a different department.

Not having internet.

Having strict filters on your phone, computer.

Making new friends.

Staying away from places where you might be tempted (any establishment that sells liquor).

Slide14

4.

Spend Time Serving Others

Song – “Others” (Hymn 92)

Vs. 3 – “Let “self” be crucified and slain, and buried deep. And all in vain may efforts be to rise again, unless to live for others.”

Focus on your family.

Focus on seeing to the needs of “Others.”

Focus on the kingdom, and what I can be doing in my small corner of the world to expand the influence of Christ.
