3. Termination of a successful group Accomplished activities ‘Sweet sorrow’ reaction Ceremony to commemorate and recognize the group and its accomplishment Formal termination before one or more meetingsClass reunions, get together etc.

4. Termination of a successful group Sufficient time to terminate so that, Progress made in accomplishing tasks and goals of the group member can be evaluated Plans can be made for continued work by the members on remaining problems Work can be done on unresolved, last minute issues that are identified by members Emotional reactions of member to terminate can be handled Members have time to discuss whether they want to plan for a special social event for the group’s ending

5. Termination of an unsuccessful group Most or all of the goals are largely unmet Reactions – anger, frustration, disappointment, despair, guilt, scape-goating, blaming and apathy E.g. group formed to write for a grant

Termination of an unsuccessful group Sufficient time for termination so that, Reasons for the lack of progress of the group can be assessed and analyzed Discussion can be held of alternatives for the group and its members to reach their goals Emotional reactions of members to terminating and their reactions to the lack of progress made by the group can be handled Members have time to work to work on unresolved, last minute issues Member have time to discuss whether they want to plan for a special social event for the group’s ending

Termination of an unsuccessful group Unsuccessful group ends abruptlyMembers may be highly critical of leader of other group members, or of experiencesLeader contact members to gain their thoughts about group, needs to prepare a critical feedback ‘Visualize possible’ criticism and then formulate the positive and realistic response to each anticipated criticism

8. A member dropping out Member is disenchanted With the group and feel group will not accomplish the goal Disagreement or dislike with other member Member may start a new job There could be several other reasons

A member dropping out Member dropping without permission leader must contact the member Desire to leave the group (some time leader may decide for sharing)Resolved conflict so the member returns back to group Exploring the reasons for leaving a group Leader must inform a member about a positive contribution Ideally person must inform or give in writing the group for termination

10. Transfer of a group member Transfer of a group to another group or professional services Origination may decide to use capacities of member to some other place Because of conflict in group Explaining to group member the reason Wishing the member for future

The leader’s leaving Group leader must terminate the work with a group because of reassignment, change of employment, health reasons, family crisesAddressing the emotional reactions Some may feel angry or betrayed Leader may expressing his feeling Selection and introduction of new leader Shifting responsibilities
