The great classic of Atlantis this book more than any other established the existence of this lost continent for the modern world Attracting hundreds of thousands of readers and stimulating vast debate it influenced generations of people including countless scientists who went on to do serious work in their fields and numerous sciencefiction writers It is a measure of the power of the Atlantis myth that despite all the evidence to the contrary the idea of a submerged Atlantic Ocean continent remains vigorous today long after Donnellys work first appearedA lawyer and politician before he turned to writing Ignatius Donnelly 18311901 spent many years amassing evidence for his book on Atlantis Displaying an immense knowledge of Platonic and Biblical material comparative archeological discoveries folk traditions of deluges and geological data supporting catastrophic volcanic activity Donnelly staggered his readers with facts and overwhelmed them with his many brilliant arguments Despite the many more recent discoveries that have proved many of his facts to be false his arguments still dazzle and his central myth continues to fascinate The highly appealing idea of a lost continent with a high civilization one that was the mother of all other civilizations is one of the most enduring of all human myths and shows no signs of disappearingA seminal work on Atlantis and a classic in the history of culture this book is the starting point for anyone sincerely interested in the Atlantis myth Still the most readable and imaginative of the books on Atlantis it is a work that will long outlive most of the more recent accounts As a study of the golden past it is an enormously intriguing and enjoyable book. Our Solution. This book had a tremendous impact on readers in the late 1800s. Written by Ignatius Donnelly, a farmer-politician with no scientific training, it developed a strikingly original theme—that a comet passed close to or struck Earth in ancient times, causing catastrophic changes that later were vaguely recalled in mythologies and biblical tales. Throughout most of the book, Donnelly supports his ideas with convincing geological, archeological, and astronomical arguments. This reprint presents Donnelly\'s theory of the comet that impacted Earth tens of thousands of years ago, producing layers of gravel (which contemporary scientists attributed to glaciation) and the destruction of an advanced civilization (Atlantis), followed by a years-long cloud cover and extreme cold. A remarkable concept that has also been mentioned in ancient Arabic writings, this theory—and the book in which it is presented—will appeal to readers in many areas of interest: occult enthusiasts, fantasy buffs, and perhaps even some members of the scientific community. The romantic legend of the rise and fall of Atlantis has enchanted imaginations since Plato first told of a glorious island in the Atlantic that sank beneath the waves. Speculation has abounded ever since: Was there really a great ancient civilization on a vast continent, now many thousands of fathoms under the sea? Or is Atlantis rooted in the Great Flood stories found in cultures around the world? Scientists formerly dismissed the possibility of Atlantis\' existence but were obliged to reconsider, partly because of the author of this book. Lewis Spence (1874–1955) wrote five books about Atlantis, and this one is considered his best. A distinguished scholar, Spence sifted through a tremendous body of fact and guesswork in fields ranging from mythology and comparative religion to geography, geology, and archeology. He brings a fresh and imaginative vision to the old stories, separating fact from fancy in regard to Atlantis\' history, geography, animal life, government, and religion. This work stands as the most authoritative study ever published on Atlantis, and Spence represents the perfect guide to this strange and enthralling mystery of the ancient world.
