Our Remembrance Garden

Holywell has recently added an additional display on to all the many others, however this one is in a different league entirely. It is a garden representing the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWl.

Slide3
What does this signifyThis special garden represents the deaths of those whom fought and died in WWl. It is very special to Holywell students and teachers alike

, this is because many of the pupils and teachers have relatives that died so we could have a better life.

Slide4
How the garden came about

Mr Haddon and Mrs Niro were inspired by the Tower of London’s poppy display of 822,000 poppies, it was also influenced by our time at Ypres a major battleground in the war.

Slide5
How they were made..

Firstly every class in the school made a clay poppy in their Art lesson. Many of the staff in the school made poppies too. They had to dry out then they were put in our kiln and fired. By the next weeks lesson they were ready to paint. That was when we had to be rather precise, being careful not to paint the wrong part. They were then left to dry. Some Year 8 students helped to construct the metal structure for the poppies to go on. Others put wire into holes in the poppies so they could be attached to the wire structure. We worked together students,

Mrs. Pickering and Mrs Niro to put the poppies and religious symbols into the garden. Some students and staff had the opportunity to place their poppies where they wanted on the display. Most importantly we worked together to create our Garden.

Over

500 poppies were made by the Holywell School community, thus creating the amazing, respectful, beautiful remembrance garden.

Everyone students and teachers were able to create their own unique poppy.

Slide7
Why they were made….

The garden was inspired by the men and women who were working to make the London display. Mrs Niro showed us how they were made and also gave an excellent demonstration as to how they were to be completed. So all the way Mrs Niro was a great inspiration for this project.
