Greece ……is a mountainous country in southeast Europe. The country consists of a mainland and a large number of bigger or smaller islands.The red spot in the picture is an island called Zakynthos.
Zakynthos - familiarly called Zante…… is the largest island in the Ionian Sea with beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and many other stunning places. Laganas Bay
the capital city, also called Zakynthos…… was completely destroyed in an earthquake in 1953. Only three buildings were left untouched:St. Dionysios Cathedral the National Bank building the church of St. Nicholas
the Blue Caves…… in the north of island attract many tourist every year
the Pirate Shipwreck in Navagio Beach……is a terminal point of each boat trip.
But the symbol of the island is „caretta caretta“ …… a kind of a sea turtle. Souvenirs with the loggerhead turtle are everywhere.

… swim to the beaches of Laganas Bay …Laganas Bay
… and lay about 100 eggs of ping-pong ball size and then return to the sea.
In the morning, a trace made by turtle flippers and a circular dimple at the end of the beach is visible in the soft sand.
The nests are labeled and guarded by Beach Patrols for about 60 days.
After two months of incubating, little hatchlings start their journey to the sea. There are many enemies on the way – seagulls, crabs and people. Onlyone in a thousand will live to adulthood.
Fortunately, there is the „ARCHELON“
The sea turtle protection society of GreeceARCHELON is a society which works closely with state agencies, institutions, fishermen and local people in order to protect the declining population of caretta caretta turtles in Greece.Every year, young volunteers from all over the world come to help on the nesting beaches and in the Rescue Center. They must speak English as the project is in the English language.It is a big advantage if the applicants are skillful or talented and can participate in the production of souvenirs which are sold to tourists. The recommended period of participation on the project is 6 weeks. Applicants who are interested in the job in the Rescue Center must be over 18 years of age.
Beach Patrols Beach Patrols work by day and night to minimize the impact of tourism on the nesting activity, e.g. They explain to beach visitors why their parasols can‘t be stood up freely wherever they want.Early in the morning, they look for new turtle nests, label them and cover them with protective baskets.At night, after the turtles finish laying their eggs, the Beach Patrols tag the animals to record their migration habits.
