ZakatSlide5
Islam has been built on five pillars: Testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the Salah (prayer), paying the
Zakah
(obligatory charity), making the Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadan
.

Pillars of Islam
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ
كَافَّةً
O you who believe! Enter into Islam perfectly (completely).

Slender long columns
Support heavy loads
Make Building more attractive
PillarsSlide7
Transmits the weight of the structure above it to other structural elements below it
Building doesn’t collapse under its own weight
Compressive supportSlide8
Material, length, diameter, and construction of a pillar dictates its load bearing capacity.
Structural ElementsSlide9
Resist lateral forces and repetitively alternating loads.
Arrangement of pillars also important in determining the level of seismic activity a building can withstand.

Who is doomed in this Month of forgiveness?
Prophet (SAW) climbed up on the
Minbar
, and then said, (
Amin

Amin
,
Amin). It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, why did you say Amin
'' .He said: Jibril came to me and said, "O Muhammad, he is doomed who hears you mentioned and does not said durood upon you.'' He said, "Say
Amin,'' so I said Amin. Then he said, "He is doomed who sees the month of Ramadan come and go, and he has not been forgiven.'' He said, "Say Amin
,'' so I said
Amin
. Then he said, "He is doomed who grows up and both his parents or one of them are still alive, and they do not cause him to enter Paradise.'' He said, "Say
Amin

Fasting is Serious Business
I have heard Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings upon him, say:
“While I was sleeping, two men came and, holding both of my arms, they brought me to a mountain which was hard to climb. And they said:“Climb this.” When I said “I can't.” They replied: “We will make it easy for you.”
Thereupon, I started to climb the mountain. When we reached the middle, suddenly harsh voices were heard.
When I asked: “What are those voices?” they replied:
“The clamour of the people of Hell.”
We started again. We suddenly saw a group of people whose cheek pouches were split, and out of these pouches flew blood; and their feet were bound!
I asked: “Who are they?”
They replied: “They are those who eat their fasts before due time’’

Do’s and don'ts of RamadanSlide20
Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days.
Sahih

Moon sightingSlide21
The people sighted the moon, so I informed the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) that I had sighted it. He fasted and commanded the people to fast.

Kurayb
said: Umm
Fadl
, daughter of
Harith
, sent him (
Fadl
, i.e. her son) to Mu'awiyah
in Syria. I (Fadl) arrived in Syria, and did the needful for her. It was there in Syria that the month of Ramadan commenced. I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday. I then came back to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah ibn
Abbas asked me (about the new moon of Ramadan) and said: When did you see it? I said: We saw it on Friday night. He said: (Did) you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw it so they observed fast and Mu'awiyah also observed fast. Thereupon he said: But we saw it on Saturday night. So we shall continue to observe the fast until we complete thirty (fasts) or we see it (the new moon of Shawwal). I said: Is the sighting of the moon by
Mu'awiyah not valid for you? He said: No; this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him
) has commanded us.

Validity of Moon sightingSlide23
AbulBakhtari
reported: We went out to perform
Umrah
and when we encamped in the valley of
Nakhlah
, we tried to see the new moon. Some of the people said: It was three nights old, and others (said) that it was two nights old. We then met
Ibn
Abbas and told him we had seen the new moon, but that some of the people said it was three nights old and others that it was two nights old. He asked on which night we had seen it; and when we told him we had seen it on such and such night, he said the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) had said Verily Allah deferred it till the time it is seen, so it is to be reckoned from the night you saw it.

Moon Sighting Dilemma Slide26
Dawn appears in Eastern regions of earth before it appears in Western regions.
Just like daily timing, day and night times differ too.
Can’t just rely on astronomical calculations. Permissible to use telescope to sight moon.
Fasting to be done ‘
Shari’ah
abide’ and not on whims and desires.
Why Muslims all over world not united in their Fasting timeSlide27
If you eat something unknowingly?

Who are Exepted
from fasting in
ramadan?Slide31
It is related from '
A'isha
, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that Hamza
ibn
'
Amr
al-Aslami asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Should I fast while travelling?" He used to fast a lot. He said, "Fast if you wish and break the fast if you wish.”
Muwattah It is related that Jabir ibn
'Abdullah said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was on a journey and he saw a crowd and a man who was being shaded. He asked, 'What is this?' They replied, 'Someone who is fasting.' He said, 'Fasting on a journey is not part of piety.'"
1. travellerSlide32
Anas
(
ra) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh
) said, "Certainly, Allah excused the traveller of fasting and a portion of the
salah
, (Allah has also excused) the pregnant woman and the breastfeeding woman of fasting"
Tirmidhi
Imam
Bukhari (r) has recorded that "Hasan (r) and Ibrahim (r) have stated regarding the breastfeeding /nursing and pregnant woman, when they fear for the health of themselves or their children, they will make
iftaar (eat and drink) and make up (the missed fasts of Ramadan) later. Saheeh
Bukhari
2.Pregnant and lactating mothersSlide33
It is related that Abu Sa'id
al-
Khudri said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, set out to the place of prayer on the Day of
Adha
or
Fitr
and passed by the women. He said, 'O congregation of women! Give alms for I have seen that you will make up the majority of the inhabitants of the Fire!' They said, 'Why, Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'You call down too many curses and show ingratitude to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intellect or
deen
. Yet the mind of even a resolute man might be swept away by one of you.' They said, 'In what way is our deen and intellect deficient, Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Is not the testimony of a woman worth only half that of a man?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'That is how your intellect is deficient. Is it not so that when a woman is menstruating, she neither prays nor fasts?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'That is how her
deen is deficient.‘
3.Woman in her periodsSlide34
Criteria when sick people can’t fast:
Intense sickness that will further make a person sick if he or she were to fast,
Recovery will be delayed because of fasting
Sickness that will cause him great difficulty in fasting and that he hopes will go away
Sickness that brings fear for more sickness
4.Sick peopleSlide35
Medical Issues in RamadanSlide36
Choice of doctor: Aware of b
asic
fiqh via Quran and
Sunnah
Details of patient:
Disease, Stamina of patient, medicines to be taken
Drug administration: Schedule, necessity, mode of intake
Nature of disease: permanent, long term, temporary
We should make utmost effort to keep the fast at any condition.
General PrinciplesSlide37
If not Urgent
Delay treatment
Keep fast
If Sick……
If Urgent
Break fast
Take treatmentSlide38
Terminally ill
Give
Fidya
every Ramadan
Focus on rest of
Ibadah
Sick people and
Fidya
options
Temporary illGive Fidya for missed fasts
Make up for missed fast before next Ramadan
Serve Illness to Recovery
Give
Fidya
when severely ill
Make up for missed fast later if fully recovered
But if there was no hope of recovery initially then
fidya
would suffice for past fastsSlide39

t is related from Abu Hurayra
, "When someone vomits, he does not break his fast. He is expelling something and not taking anything in." It is mentioned from Abu
Hurayra
, "He breaks the fast," but the first opinion is sounder.
Ibn
'
