How can you tell? What do they tell us about the past? • In small groups, a sk the students to re - create one of the images by making a freeze frame. As each group shares, invite one character to come to life, asking them how they feel, what they are doing and who they are with. • Hand - out the printed copies of the photographs from the case, and then compare and contrast with cotemporary life in the UK  focus on clothes, hair, what people are buying etc. Observing and sketching people in s chool using a sketchbook: • Over a period of a week, nominate different children in your class to act as observers  ask them to take photos of children learning in the classroom, make quick observational sketches in the playground, and add annotations that describe what people are doing. • Once each child has spent time as an observer, they can look over their sketches and spend time developing them further  re - sketching and using their photographs as the basis of other drawn/painted images in their sketchb ook. Creating a scrapbook of observations: • As a whole class, plan a scrapbook that is made up of the students sketchbook images  ask each child to pick out their best images, then a group at a time photocopy and collage them across a series of pages. C an they think of a way to add their original annotations creatively? Thinking about a final piece for the whole school: • Using their sketchbooks and the class scrapbook as inspiration, plan a final piece which will communicate the school’s core values to visitors and new children  What could it be? Suggest ideas such as a film, a large painting, sculpture etc. Curriculum Links Art : - To create sketch books to r ecord their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. - To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay].
