Since it has potential for use in a variety of settings including dietetics, public health nutrition, nursing, medicine and the allied health professions its contents are organized to provide for maximum flexibility in both presentation and course length. The full-color eighth edition of this classic text helps students apply basic nutrition principles to client care across the lifespan. It concisely introduces the basics of nutrients, wellness, and medical nutrition therapy without overwhelming readers with excessive biochemistry content. In today\'s health care environment, it is critical that the nutritionist be skilled in interviewing, assessing, and counseling. The nutritionist, through appropriate counseling and intervention, can help avoid costly readmissions and play an important role in counseling clients toward healthier lifestyles. This revision of a popular text addresses nutrition counseling for conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, renal disease, hypertension, cancer, eating disorders, and pregnancy. The updated edition also features new case studies and sections on metabolic syndrome, prevention of neural tube defects, insulin resistance in an overweight child, iron deficiency anemia, and drug-herb interactions. This edition has been updated to reflect the most current practice guidelines. Co-written by a multidisciplinary group of physicians and registered dietitians, each chapter includes cases that present relevant medical and nutritional implications of various clinical scenarios. Readers will learn how to diagnose and manage nutritional problems and answer their patients\' most frequently asked questions. The text also contains over 195 review questions that allow readers to test their knowledge and prepare of course, licensing, and certifying exams. Successful completion of the review questions qualifies for 35 American Dietetic Association continuing education credits. More information, including powerpoint slides to accompany the 3rd edition, can be found at http: //www.med.upenn.edu/nutrimed/mnd3.html The opening chapters of this text deal with clinical reasoning in examination, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
