Think of the money you may lose as the cost of your entertainment. Consider any money you win as a bonus. Leave when you reach your limit, whether you’re winning or losing. Understand that financial loss is part of gambling. Don’t borrow money to gamble. Don’t let gambling interfere with, or become a substitute for, family, friends, or work. Don’t chase losses; chances are you’ll lose even more trying to recoup your losses. Don’t use gambling as a way to cope with emotional or physical pain. Know the warning signs of problem gambling. KNOW THE SIGNS Would you know a gambling problem if you saw it in a friend, loved one, coworker, patient, or student? 䥴’s important to know the signs because 3% of the population may have a problem, putting them and their families at financial or emotional risk. Here are some warning signs: Preoccupied with gambling and unable to stop Bragging about gambling, exaggerating wins, and minimizing losses Borrowing money for gambling Lying about time spent gambling or unpaid debt Unexplained absences Jeopardizing a significant relationship or job by gambling HOW TO HELP If someone you know is gambling for more than fun, they may have a problem. Talking to them can seem scary, but they need you for support. Here are some ways to begin the conversation: Find a comfortable place to talk where you won’t be disturbed. Keep it simple and straightforward. Tell the person you care about them and you’re concerned about how they are acting. Tell the person exactly what they’ve done that concerns you. Tell the person how their behavior is affecting other people—be specific. Be clear about what you expect from them. (“I want you to talk to someone about your gambling.”) Be clear about what they can expect from you. (“I won’t cover for you anymor攮鐩 After you’ve told the person what you’ve seen and how you feel, allow them to respond. Let the person know you are willing to help, but don’t try to counsel them yourself. Encourage them to call the Problem Gambling Helpline. If you are the spouse or family member of a problem gambler, it is important for you to take care of yourself and realize that you are not responsible for the gambler’s behavior. Problem gambling is not a bad habit or a moral weakness, it is a serious condition. With treatment, problem gamblers can put the game in perspective and make decisions to improve their lives. If playing isn’t fun anymore, call or chat for help: Problem Gambling Helpline: 1-800-GAMBLE-5 or 1-800-426-2535 Chat: wi-problemgamblers.org Free. Confidential. Always there. THINGS TO KNOW You must be at least 18 years old to purchase Lottery tickets. Credit cards are NOT accepted for Lottery purchases. Tickets are void if stolen, mutilated, altered, unreadable, counterfeit, misregistered, defective, or fail to pass the Lottery’s confidential validation test. Jackpots shall be paid to the recipient, or their estate in the event of death, unless otherwise ordered by a court of law. Prizes must be claimed within 180 days from the date of the lotto game draw, or from the declared game end for instant scratch tickets. All Lottery winnings are taxable. Prize winnings are subject to both federal and state tax withholding. Tickets, transactions, winners, and winnings are subject to state law and Lottery regulations. Additional details available on Winner Claim Form. AVOID A SCAM Beware of notices informing you of winning a contest or giveaway you did not enter. Never pay upfront fees of any kind to claim a legitimate state lottery prize. Reject telephone, mail, email, or internet offers to buy a ticket for a chance into another state’s or country’s lottery. It is against the law to purchase foreign lottery tickets or lottery tickets sold outside the state of origin. Scam artists use the names of both legitimate and fraudulent lotteries to steal from unsuspecting individuals. Always verify phone numbers and mailing addresses by searching official sources. Never provide personal information such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or Social Security numbers over the phone or online. Beware of “urgent” messages that require an immediate response. It’s a common tactic used in scams that gives you little time to check out the offer. Legal lotteries do not guarantee that you will win a prize and do not require people to join prize pools to play. Never agree to cash a lottery ticket for a stranger. PLAY IT SAFE — PLAYER SECURITY Sign the back of your ticket immediately after purchase. Signing the back of the ticket is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself from theft, and to prove you own the ticket. Lottery tickets are bearer instruments; whoever signs the back of the ticket is considered the rightful owner. Review your ticket to make sure you received what you intended to buy. Players are responsible for checking the accuracy of tickets before leaving the store. Know the game being played. Game details are available at wilottery.com. Game brochures are available at Wisconsin Lottery retailers. If a ticket appears to have been tampered with, contact the Wisconsin Lottery immediately. Only purchase Lottery tickets from a licensed Wisconsin Lottery retailer. If you are approached by someone offering a “winning ticket” for cash, refuse the offer and contact the Wisconsin Lottery immediately. Keep your Lottery ticket in a safe place. The Lottery is not liable for damaged, lost, or stolen tickets. Determine on your own whether your ticket has won a prize before you present it to be checked or cashed. You can verify prize amounts by using our ticket checkers, which can be found at all Wisconsin Lottery retailers. Video screens showing Wisconsin Lottery transaction results are available at all Wisconsin Lottery retailers. You may ask to see the cash authorization slip which shows the winning amount for a transaction. Note: The retailer retains the redeemed winning ticket(s) and cash authorization slip(s) for their records. If you are told your ticket is not a winner and you think it is: Ask for the ticket back and contact the Wisconsin Lottery.
