Romans Salvation by the Gospel through obedience to the faith

Theme of RomansFor I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.   For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “the just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)

Outline of RomansDOCTRINAL: How the gospel saves the sinner Introduction (1:1-17)All have sinned and need salvation (1:18—3:31) The gospel saves by grace through faith (4:1—5:21) Faith requires and acquires a changed life (6:1—8:39) NATIONAL: How the gospel relates to Israel It does not annul God’s purpose for Israel (9:1-33) It fulfills God’s promises to Israel (10:1-21) It presents a great opportunity for Israel (11:1-36) PRACTICAL: How the gospel bears on conduct In society (12:1—13:14) Among brethren (14:1—15:33) Conclusion : Exhortations and salutations (16:1-25 )

The Wrath of God(Romans 1:18-24) Why must God save us from His own wrath? (1:18)God’s wrath is a necessary response to His righteous nature being assaulted by human sin (Habakkuk 1:13; Romans 8:7; James 4:4; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 3:5-6) Sinners are without excuse (1:19-23) God’s nature has been shown to man in creation; there is no excuse for failing to perceive it (1:19-20; Psalm 19:1-4; Acts 14:16-17)

What do the heavens say about the nature of our Creator? (Psalm 19)

The Wrath of God(Romans 1:18-24) Why must God save us from His own wrath? (1:18)God’s wrath is a necessary response to His righteous nature being assaulted by human sin (Habakkuk 1:13; Romans 8:7; James 4:4; Ephesians 5:6; Col. 3:5-6) Sinners are without excuse (1:19-23) God’s nature has been shown to man in creation; there is no excuse for failing to perceive it (1:19-20; Psalm 19:1-4; Acts 14:16-17) Man knowingly perverted the glory of God into images of created things, bringing God’s wrath upon themselves (2 Chron. 34:25; Psalm 78:58)* Men do not believe because they have darkened their own hearts by foolish pride and self will (1:21b-22; Eph. 2:3; 4:17-19; Eccl. 7:29)

“God gave them up…”(Romans 1:24-32)God gave them up to uncleanness (1:24-25) When we defile the nature of God in our minds, we defile ourselves! (Psalm 14:1-4)“Uncleanness” is impurity of body, mind, or soul. It is the “dirty” mind or the “blackened” heart. In the NT, it is often connected to sexual immorality or perversion (1 Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3-5; 1 Thess. 4:3-7)

“God gave them up…”(Romans 1:24-32) God gave them up to vile passions (1:26-27)“Vile” is that which is degrading and shameful.“Natural” comes from “phusikos” and refers here to inborn, natural God-given order, including instincts.“Natural use” of male and female bodies in a union approved by God is honorable (Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 7:1-7) Unnatural use is forbidden for citizens of the kingdom of heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Jude 7)

“God gave them up…”(Romans 1:24-32) God gave them over to a debased mind (1:28-32)When the mind is debased, behavior will be unfit “Debased” means not approved or failing the test. “Fitting” refers to what is proper or becoming. Behavior unfit for humans includes unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful Consenting with such unfit behavior is as egregious as committing it!
