Review Questions - #1- #10
What do the letters PPE Stand for?
Which PPE Should you ALWAYS wear in the shop?
What are the three things that make up the fire triangle?
What color are acetylene tanks and hoses?
What should you yell when striking an arc?Slide4
Review Questions - #1- #10
6. What is the number on rule in the shop?
7. What is the term for anything that poses a danger?
8. What are the three causes for accidents in the shop?
9. What pressure (PSI) should Oxygen be set to?
10. What pressure (PSI) should acetylene be set to?Slide5
Welding PPE
Wear safety glasses and welding gloves
Always use pliers to handle hot metal
Don’t pick it up with your gloves
Wear long jeans or overalls
Wear close toed shoes, pull hair back and no loose clothes or jewelrySlide6
Arc Welding
Using Electricity to fuse two pieces of metal together
Needs three things to weld
Heat source
Shielding
Filler materialSlide7
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
Also known as Stick Welding
Uses electricity to supply heat
The consumable stick electrode provides the filler material
The gas shield is provided by the flux around the electrodeSlide8
Stick Welding Safety
Make sure that your work area is clean and dry
Check your ground clamp to make sure that you have a good connection
Let hot pieces of metal cool off between weldsSlide9
Stick Welding Safety
NEVER

NEVER
Look at the Arc!!
Always wear a helmet when welding
Before striking an Arc yell “Cover”
When you are done, clean your slag off with a wire brush or chipping hammerSlide10
Stick Welding Safety
NEVER lay the electrode holder down when the machine is turned off
If your electrode sticks to the metal, turn off the machine first
Clean slag off weld when completed
Keep ground as far from
arc as possibleSlide11

Make Sure that your Work clamp is attached to the metal or it will not workSlide17
Starting a Welder
Turn the knob to adjust to the right amperage
Make sure you are ready to weld before you turn on the machineSlide18
2 Methods to Starting a weld
Tapping – Keep tapping the electrode on the metal until the arc is started
Striking – Strike the electrode against the metal like striking a matchSlide19
Keeping the Arc
Welding is done by melting metal together.
Once you’ve struck your arc, keeping moving the metal pool along until you are at the end of the metal Slide20
After Welding
Once you are done welding, place the metal in water to cool it down
Only pick it up with Pliers!!!!!
Using your chipping hammer or wire brush, brush away all of the slag
Slag is the black stuff that will be on top of your weld
Slag makes your weld look bad and could make the metal weaker if you weld on itSlide21
After Welding
Slag – black material covering the welding
This can be cleaned off by:
Chipping Hammer
Wire Brush

Make Adjustments
If you cant get the arc to start, turn up the metal
If your metal is burning holes through it, its too hot and you need to turn it down!!
Look to see if your going too fast or too slowSlide23Slide24Slide25
Good or Bad?Slide26
A Good Weld is…
Even all the way across
Straight
Deep Penetration
Strong – Wont BreakSlide27
