What is Rape?Slide2

Why? Talk about it?

From the book “Sold” by Patricia McCormick. Lakshmi is a thirteen years old girl, a victim, that was sold into prostitution. She thought that she was going to work as a maid in India to support her family.

“ underneath the weight of him, I cannot see or move or breathe. He fumbles with his pants, forces my legs apart, and I can feel him pushing himself between my thighs. I gasp for air kick and squirm he thrusts his tongue in my mouth and I bit down with all my might.” pg. 103 Discuss how this makes you feel.Slide3

Misconceptions of rape: Did you know what people think about rape? According to a poll conducted

by Rebecca Camber From The Daily Mail.

Twenty-four percent of youth say wearing a short skirt, accepting a drink or having conversation with the rapist made victims partly responsible. According to the sexual assault clinics that carried out the poll. They found out that only three men claimed they didn’t think it was rape if they made their partner have sex when they didn’t want to.The poll of 1,000 adults found that 54 percent of women believe rape victims should be held accountable for their attack.Slide4

However, after reading the study of

Elizabeth Harrison.

A study has shown, more than one in ten said that dancing provocatively, flirting or wearing revealing clothing made them partly responsible. Thirteen percent's of men admitted having sex with a partner who was too drunk to know was happening.Nearly a fifth of women thought the victim was at fault. If she went back to the attackers house, while more than a tenth(13 percent) said someone who had been dancing in a provocative way or flirting should be prepared for the consequence.Slide5

Debate: Are Rape Victims Partly To Blame?

Yes because...

By dressing provocatively, being promiscuous, encouraging male attention with overt flirting and teasing, drinking excessively and by knowingly placing themselves in situations where they can be attacked (walking a deserted path home, using an unlicensed taxi etc.) some women consciously place themselves in danger of being sexually assaulted and are partly to blame. To use a common comparison, if a man walks down a dark alley in a rough neighborhood with his money clip out, or engaging in other ostentatious displays of wealth, would we say he was completely without responsibility if he were robbed? We would likely conclude that while it was not his fault, and while he did not deserve it, he does bare some responsibility for putting himself in such a situation. On the other hand, he might be robbed in his driveway. Similarly, the fact that some women are raped in circumstances in which they bear no responsibility does not absolve others who put themselves at risk of bearing some small amount of responsibility.

No because...

If it were true that the fashion of the day was the reason for the rape of women - then how could it be that rape exists in countries where women are not dressing according to western fashions.

Does every attractive young woman become a victim of rape? No that is not a logical reason to suggest that Rape Victims are partly to blame. What could we say of an elderly woman or man who is raped by those who commit these crimes.

The reality is that no woman or man is going to knowingly place themselves in a situation of seeking rape. But there are many who are raped because of other situations - such as not being able to afford safe public transport - having no option but to walk a lonely path home.
