TheThamesBasinHeathsarelegallyprotectedbecauseofinternationallyimportantpopulationsofthreeoftheUK’srarestbreedingbirds:Dartfordwarbler,nightjarandwoodlark.Theyarealsohometoarangeofotherspecialistheathlandwildlife,includingsmoothsnakes,sandlizardsandsilver-studdedbluebutterflies.TheThamesBasinHeathsareafantasticplaceforlocalpeopleandvisitorstoappreciateandenjoythebeautyofheathlandsandtheirremarkablewildlife.ThamesBasinHeathsThenetworkofheathlandsitesacrossHampshire,SurreyandBerkshireareknownastheThamesBasinHeaths.Together,theyareoneofthemostimportantwildlifesitesinEurope,andavitalremnantofanhistoriclandscape.Heathlandsarefragileplacesandcanbedamagedeasily.Walkers,horse-ridersanddog-walkerscanallunwittinglydamagetheareastheyenjoyvisitingsomuchthroughAsthenumberofpeoplelivingneartotheThamesBasinHeathsincreases,sodothethreatstotheheathlandsandthewildlifethatdependsThecurrenthousingproposalsfortheareasurroundingtheThamesBasinHeathsareunsustainable.Asolutionthattakesaccountofhousingneedsandensuresthesurvivaloftheheathsisneedednow.Thissolutionmust:Provideadditionalpublicopenspacesforrecreationtoreducethevisitorpressureontheheaths.LimitthedamagebycurrentandfutureusersoftheThamesBasinHeaths.Thiswillinvolvemeasuresthatencouragepeopletousetheheathsmoresensitivelyincludinginformationboards,waymarkingandminoralterationstosomecarparks.EnsurethatexistinglandownersmaintaintheThamesBasinHeathsinthebestpossiblecondition.Tosecurethefutureoftheheathlands,forwildlifetheseactionsmustbecoordinatedacrossallthelocalauthoritiesintheThamesBasinHeathsarea.TheRSPBisworkinghardtoachieveaconsensusbetweenlocalauthorities,developers,localpeopleandconservationbodies.ThamesBasinHeathsunderthreatThewayforwardonthemfortheirsurvival.Uncontrolledfires,flytippingandthe“invasion”ofgardenplantsalldamagetheheaths,slowlydestroyingtheirspecialnatureasthelocalpopulationAsthebirdsthatdependontheheathlandallnestonorneartotheground,theyareatparticularriskfromcatsanddogsastheyoftendisturbnestingbirdsoreveneattheeggsorchicks.Withmorevisitorsandmorelocalresidents,therewillbemorecatsanddogsandtherisktoheathlandwildlifewillbethatmuchgreater.Planstobuildatleast40,000newhomesaroundtheThamesBasinHeathsmeanthatthesepressureswillonlygetworse.WeurgeyoutosupporttheRSPBinoureffortstoprotecttheThamesBasinHeaths.Withouturgentactiontosafeguardtheheaths,theiruniquewildlifewilldisappearforever.ForfurtherinformationabouttheThamesBasinHeathsandhowtoprotectthempleasecontactJoannaCrouch01273763622ore-mailjoanna.crouch@rspb.org.ukwww.rspb.org.uk/thamesbasinheathsRegdcharityno202076 rspb-images.comChrisGomersallrspb-images.comAndyHayrspb-images.comColinCarverrspb-images.comGeorgeMcCarthyWoodlarkSandLizardSilver-studdedBlueButterfly
